Job description:
Based in northwest Michigan, Northern Building Supply operates two full-service lumber yards and is recognized as the region’s premier supplier of premium building materials for both contractors and homeowners. In addition to high-quality lumber, Northern Building Supply distributes an extensive array of upscale specialty products, including windows, doors, cabinets, decking, and both interior and exterior trim.
The position involves delivering materials to job sites, inspecting and maintaining the truck, reporting shortages and claims to the supervisor, and assisting in the loading and storage of materials. This role is typically suited for a less experienced CDL or tractor trailer driver.
Pay Range: $20-$26/hour
Essential Job Duties:
- Maintain a current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License as required.
- Prepare DOT-mandated logs of on-duty and driving time.
- Organize and secure loads; assist forklift operators during loading.
- Account for all company funds, including cash on delivery (C.O.D.).
- Verify order accuracy, deliver, and unload materials to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Complete daily pre-inspections of equipment.
- Record all merchandise returned by truck and assist in unloading materials for credit.
- Adhere to guidelines established by the Department of Transportation, operate boom equipment safely and efficiently, and maintain records pertaining to equipment use and time charged.
- Log deliveries using the supervisor’s log sheet.
- Attend to customers while the truck is being loaded.
- Relay messages from customers while on-site.
- Assist the supervisor, other employees, and various work areas as assigned, while also contributing to maintaining cleanliness in the yard and warehouse.
- Comply with the Company’s attendance policy by maintaining consistent and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Management.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum education requirement: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED).
- Minimum experience requirement: 6 months of CDL experience, including lumber disposal.
- Basic experience with flatbeds and/or tractor trailers is required.
- Special skills: Ability to perform arithmetic, read orders, write instructions, and complete necessary forms.
- Effective communication skills for interaction with customers, colleagues, and supervisors, as well as safe lifting techniques.
- A clean driving record, a current CDL operator’s license, and up-to-date DOT qualifications are mandatory.
- Physical requirements include stooping, bending, twisting, and throwing, as well as the ability to work in varying climates and environmental conditions, with the capacity to lift 100 lbs or more repetitively.
