Job description:
Based in northwest Michigan, Northern Building Supply (NBS) operates two full-service lumber yards, establishing itself as the region’s premier supplier of high-quality building materials for both contractors and homeowners. In addition to premium lumber, NBS provides an extensive array of specialty products, including windows, doors, cabinets, decking, and interior and exterior trim.
The role involves delivering materials to job sites, conducting regular inspections and maintenance of the delivery truck, reporting shortages and claims to the supervisor, and assisting with the loading and storage of materials. This position is typically suited for less experienced drivers holding a CDL or tractor trailer license.
Pay Range: $20-$26/hour
Essential Job Duties:
- Maintain a current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License as required by state regulations.
- Prepare and maintain DOT-required logs of hours on duty and driving.
- Organize and secure loads while assisting forklift operators during the loading process.
- Account for all company funds, including cash upon delivery (C.O.D.) transactions.
- Verify orders for accuracy, ensuring delivery and unloading meets customer satisfaction.
- Complete daily pre-inspections of equipment to ensure operational safety.
- Record all merchandise returned by truck and assist in unloading materials designated for credit.
- Adhere to guidelines established by the Department of Transportation, operating boom equipment safely and efficiently while documenting usage and time.
- Accurately log deliveries on the supervisor’s designated log sheet.
- Provide customer assistance while the truck is being loaded, addressing any inquiries.
- Relay messages from customers while on-site, ensuring effective communication.
- Support the supervisor and colleagues in various roles as assigned and contribute to maintaining a clean and orderly environment in the yard and warehouse.
- Comply with the company’s attendance policy by maintaining regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum education requirement: High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
- Minimum experience: Six months of CDL driving experience, including lumber unloading.
- Basic experience with flatbeds and/or tractor trailers is required.
- Special skills: Ability to perform arithmetic calculations, read orders, write instructions, and accurately complete forms.
- Effective communication with customers, colleagues, and supervisors utilizing both verbal and written skills; must apply safe lifting techniques.
- Maintain a clean driving record, possess a current CDL operator’s license, and adhere to current DOT qualifications.
- Physical demands include stooping, bending, twisting, and lifting. Must be able to work in a variety of climates and environmental conditions, with the capacity to lift 100 pounds or more repetitively.
