Summary
Under the supervision of a Registered and/or Practical Nurse, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for providing a variety of essential care activities for seniors in a long-term care setting. This role involves assisting residents with dressing, bathing, and eating, as well as collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens and measuring vital signs, without initiating or administering intravenous fluids. Additionally, the CNA will support nursing staff with procedures as needed and accurately document resident care services and interactions.
Essential Position Functions
The following duties are typical for this position; however, this list is not exhaustive. Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
- Respond to signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to assess residents’ needs.
- Assist residents with bathing, dressing, and undressing.
- Serve and collect food trays, providing assistance to residents who require help with eating.
- Transport residents or provide assistance as they walk.
- Drape residents for examinations and treatments, remaining present to assist with instruments and lighting adjustments.
- Reposition and turn residents, independently or with assistance, to prevent bedsores.
- Change bed linens, run errands, direct visitors, and answer telephone inquiries.
- Take and record vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rates, as well as monitor food and fluid intake and output as directed.
- Assist with laundry and housekeeping tasks.
- Dust and clean residents’ living spaces.
- Demonstrate reliability and punctuality in meeting attendance requirements with no restrictions.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Education/Experience
- A minimum of one year of college or technical school education, or three to six months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Certification as a Nurse’s Aide in Michigan is mandatory.
