As a Senior Systems Engineer at Rocket Companies, you will be charged with the construction, integration, and troubleshooting of server infrastructure while ensuring the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the information systems that support our entire portfolio. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in both private and public clouds, demonstrate proficiency in operating systems, and embody an automation-first mentality. A quick learner who approaches both familiar and unfamiliar technologies with innovative thinking is essential for this role.
In this capacity, you will support a diverse array of infrastructure platforms and initiatives, addressing break-fix issues, security requirements, buildout and architecture, as well as general operational functions. Your responsibilities may encompass tasks such as automating server operating system upgrades, developing new Terraform modules to meet business needs, or assisting application teams in resolving connection issues between EC2 instances and S3 buckets.
About the Role
- Collaborate with application teams and fellow infrastructure engineers to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot infrastructure within our private and public cloud environments, utilizing a broad range of proprietary and open-source technologies.
- Install, support, and configure systems or applications that enhance productivity for our team members.
- Partner with business units and technology teams to explore, promote, and implement new technological solutions.
- Create automation to streamline complex, time-consuming workflows and processes.
- Document systems and processes to ensure knowledge sharing and continuity.
- Participate in an on-call rotation to provide ongoing support.
About You
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in general workstation or server administration.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office/365 suite of applications.
- Solid understanding of at least one programming, configuration, or scripting language such as C#/.NET, Go, Ansible, PowerShell, or Terraform.
- Familiarity with source code management (SCM) and experience with Git (preferred), TFVC, or SVN.
- Understanding of branching, forking, pull requests, and related concepts.
- Proficient with an IDE or code editor such as Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Atom, or Notepad++.
- Knowledge of code-sharing and publishing platforms including GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket.
- Comprehensive understanding of computer networking principles (e.g., DHCP, DNS, HTTP, TCP/UDP, IPv4/IPv6, OSI model).
- Comfortable working with a continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) platform like CircleCI, Jenkins, Octopus Deploy, or GitHub Actions; alternatively, experience with job scheduling/orchestration platforms such as Rundeck or Tidal.
- Proficient in at least one of the following domains:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its associated services (Lambda, EC2, API Gateway, Route53, ECS, Elasticache, VPC, etc.)
- Windows Server
- Various Linux operating systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Rocky, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian)
- Container technologies (Kubernetes, Docker) and their respective components (Rancher, Helm, Trusted Registry, etc.)
- Server hardware and data center architecture
- Understanding of client-server architecture in relation to web/app servers, databases, and other infrastructure platforms.
- Capable of troubleshooting a wide range of both familiar and unfamiliar technologies using existing expertise and knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience working within Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Previous experience in a customer-facing role and/or helpdesk environment.
- Experience working with physical hardware in a datacenter setting.
- Knowledge of any of the following: VMware, Redis and/or other caching technologies, Splunk, Azure DevOps, PowerBI, Dynatrace, ServiceNow, or PagerDuty.
- Understanding of agile development and delivery methodologies.
