Job description:
On behalf of the Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at Michigan State University, the Outreach and Engagement Manager plays a pivotal role in providing inclusive leadership and expertise in the design, organization, and facilitation of initiatives aimed at advancing the institution’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic priorities through outreach, engagement, and education.

The Outreach and Engagement Manager is responsible for delivering visible leadership both on and off campus, fostering active and effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders. This role assists in coordinating and managing efforts to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners. Additionally, the manager is tasked with planning, implementing, monitoring, and assessing institutional events and programs that promote MSU’s diversity and inclusion objectives.

In managing various projects, the Outreach and Engagement Manager coordinates campus-wide initiatives and collaborates with executive, academic, and administrative leadership throughout the university. To further advance MSU’s strategic priorities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, this position leverages project management expertise to facilitate campus-wide cultural and educational initiatives, enhancing MSU’s reputation as a national leader in diversity and inclusion.

This full-time, campus-based position is located in East Lansing, MI, with some flexibility for hybrid work arrangements. Regular travel is not a requirement.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
– Lead the production, implementation, and assessment of priority events, outreach initiatives, and community engagement activities aligned with IDI’s mission.
– Develop and execute outreach strategies to enhance engagement across MSU’s diverse community in support of strategic values related to diversity and inclusion.
– Create and facilitate learning opportunities aimed at enhancing cultural competency and promoting inter- and intra-cultural engagement.
– Oversee project management processes, including preparation of planning materials, action plans, and follow-up activities with committees, partners, and stakeholders to ensure programmatic success.
– Manage budget processes, personnel activities, and other administrative functions, including authorization of expenditures related to outreach and engagement.
– Collect and analyze data to assess needs, evaluate programs, and develop tools to measure program effectiveness and improve efforts.
– Prepare reports and articles detailing strategies, activities, and outcomes of programmatic initiatives undertaken.
– Collaborate with on- and off-campus stakeholders to effectively implement outreach and engagement efforts that exemplify MSU’s core values and strategic commitments.
– Engage in fundraising and revenue generation to support IDI programs and events.
– Coordinate logistics and operations for IDI programs, including management of event registration, attendance tracking, evaluation processes, communication strategies with IDI Communications Manager, and relationship cultivation with MSU partners.
– Supervise staff and student employees, providing guidance on their academic progress and professional service to Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.
– Perform additional duties as assigned, encompassing responsibilities typically associated with executive management roles in a higher education context.

Minimum Requirements:
– Bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge gained through related experience.
– A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in providing strategic leadership and oversight of outreach and engagement activities in a large organization.
– At least three years of experience in leading and supervising outreach and engagement strategy, planning, administration, development, and assessment.
– Expertise in utilizing qualitative and quantitative data to enhance outreach and engagement processes.
– Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizational settings.
– Proven experience in effective communication within diverse environments to varied audiences.
– A minimum of three years of successful experience in supervising and developing staff.

Desired Qualifications:
– Advanced degree (master’s, terminal, or doctoral) or specialized training/certification.
– Seven or more years of experience leading significant outreach and engagement efforts with measurable community impact and a focus on continuous improvement.
– Five or more years of demonstrated expertise in developing, planning, administering, and assessing diversity and inclusion outreach initiatives.
– Progressive professional experience in higher education with insight into community member and stakeholder needs.
– Proven ability to engage effectively across diverse identities and cultural affiliations, exhibiting strong conflict resolution and cross-cultural communication skills.
– A deep understanding and commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
– Capability to lead with both decisiveness and a consultative approach, demonstrating strong organizational skills, integrity, and the ability to foster trust.
– Ability to build positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders, effectively representing MSU and the Spartan community.
