Position Purpose:
Food and food service delivery drivers play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the nation’s food supply chain. Our delivery drivers are responsible for ensuring that customer products arrive punctually and in excellent condition, while also representing our company and cultivating enduring relationships with our clients.
The Driver, Hourly CDL-A is tasked with operating a tractor trailer or straight truck on intrastate and interstate routes, including local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight routes. This role involves the timely and safe delivery of food and food-related products in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The driver will communicate and interact with customers, vendors, and co-workers in a professional manner, ensuring timely and accurate responses to inquiries. Collaboration with team members within the department and organization is essential to effectively serve our company.
Key Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
– Conducting all requisite safety checks (i.e., pre/post trip), including inspections of the tractor/truck and trailer, in accordance with DOT regulations. Ensuring that vehicles meet company safety standards and addressing any safety issues as needed.
– Adhering to all DOT regulations and company guidelines for safe driving practices.
– Promptly reporting all safety hazards and inspecting trailers for properly loaded and secured freight.
– Performing item count checks and verifying customer invoices for loaded products. Accurately completing all required paperwork associated with freight in a clear and legible manner.
– Maneuvering the tractor to the loading dock and attaching preloaded trailers as necessary.
– Driving to and delivering customer orders according to a predetermined route delivery schedule, unloading products, and transporting items to designated customer storage areas.
– Conducting damage control checks on items, scanning, and notifying supervisors for removal of orders following company policy. Confirming delivery of items with customers and obtaining appropriate signatures, as well as collecting payments (cash or checks) when required.
– Loading customer returns onto the trailer and securing trailer doors. Ensuring that the tractor, trailer, and freight are properly locked and secured at all times.
– Unloading damaged goods and customer returns, completing necessary paperwork, and managing the removal of all equipment and materials, including trash, from trailers as needed.
– Keeping a daily record of hours of service and logging them in compliance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements.
– Performing general housekeeping duties within the tractor and loading dock area, maintaining cleanliness of trailers as required. Securing all equipment and completing necessary paperwork at the end of each shift.
– Executing other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
– High School Diploma/GED or Equivalent
– Minimum 6 months of commercial driving experience
– Valid CDL-A
– Must be at least 21 years of age
– Compliance with all State licensing and/or certification requirements (where applicable)
– Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past 3 years
– Ability to pass a post-offer drug test and criminal background check
– Successful completion of a road test
– Attainment of a valid current DOT Health Card or the ability to secure a new DOT Health Card
– Capability to hand-lift and utilize equipment, such as a two-wheeler and lift gate, to move and stack product cases/freight of varying sizes and weights throughout the shift; products typically range from 10-35 pounds and can weigh between approximately 60 and 90 pounds, depending on the location.
Preferred Qualifications:
– High School Diploma/GED or Equivalent
– Over 1 year of commercial driving experience
– Over 1 year of experience in the foodservice distribution industry
– Familiarity with onboard computer systems and electronic log systems (e.g., PeopleNet)
– Experience with handheld point-of-delivery scanning systems (e.g., POD)
– Background in customer service-related work
