Accountability Objectives:
The primary objective of this position is to provide a safe, clean, and sanitary environment for patients, visitors, and staff. The role involves performing various departmental functions focused on routine cleaning and sanitation in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies, utilizing safe work practices, and adhering to state and federal regulatory compliance guidelines. This position requires coordination with departmental leadership and the Logistics Center to effectively meet the environmental service needs of the organization.

II. Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education, Licensure/Certification, and Experience Required.
A. Education
A high school diploma or GED is preferred. The ability to read and write is required.

B. Licensure/Certification

C. Special Skills/Aptitudes

  • Possess excellent customer service orientation skills, enabling effective interaction with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers, and community groups.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and pushing heavy objects up to 35 lbs.
  • Capacity to learn and execute various job-related tasks efficiently.
  • Proven ability to work within a healthcare environment while demonstrating sensitivity to the needs and dignity of patients, visitors, and staff.

Previous experience in housekeeping activities within a clinical environment is preferred.

III. Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Perform daily cleaning and disinfecting procedures for various areas, including discharge, office, clinical, and patient spaces, by utilizing prescribed techniques, equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
  2. Demonstrate the physical capability to work continuously at a vigorous pace, including dismantling beds, isolettes, and cribs, while maintaining a high standard of quality and productivity.
  3. Ensure overall cleanliness of trash storage rooms and staging areas for trash and compactor, both in internal and external areas of the hospital.
  4. Return all housekeeping materials to the appropriate storerooms, janitor’s closets, or storage areas. At the end of each shift, clean and return dirty mops, rags, and equipment to the designated area.
  5. Clean and disinfect I.V. poles and portable commodes.
  6. Properly handle and utilize all cleaning chemicals according to established guidelines, including correct dilutions.
  7. Execute cleaning tasks in patient rooms, involving stripping and making beds, restroom cleaning, isolation room procedures, and maintaining cleanliness of various surfaces.
  8. Perform cleaning duties in common hospital areas, including maintaining restrooms, floors, and public spaces, and following appropriate cleaning procedures.
  9. Complete any additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Report for work on time, appropriately dressed in uniform (including hospital-issued technology), prepared to work in the assigned area.
  • Utilize communication devices issued by SJMO, ensuring access to all systems.
  • Take breaks at assigned times in designated areas unless prior approval is obtained from the department supervisor.
  • Remain in assigned work areas, seeking permission from the supervisor to leave the premises.
  • Exhibit adherence to the SJMHS Service Excellence Standards.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform competencies and essential functions satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation.
