Job description:
$3,750 Sign-on Bonus
Schedule: Midnights 8:30 PM – 7:00 AM
GENERAL SUMMARY:
In this role, you will work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist to accurately fill medication orders, including the preparation of IV admixtures, while maintaining comprehensive records and adhering to both departmental and Medical Center policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Package and label medications in accordance with dispensing requirements.
- Compound topical preparations, such as creams and ointments, as well as oral solutions under the pharmacist’s direction.
- Organize and file patient orders, profiles, prescriptions, and other relevant records.
- Utilize the pharmacy computer system to enter information, execute programs, and generate reports and labels.
- Manage phone inquiries and redirect calls to appropriate personnel.
- Monitor medication expiration dates and ensure compliance.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Keep detailed logs, records, and documentation, filing them in the appropriate location.
- Restock medications and supplies as needed.
- Assist in training new personnel.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the staff pharmacist or pharmacy coordinator.
Inpatient Pharmacy Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive and direct workflow from the service window and pneumatic tubes.
- Accurately fill physician orders, medication carts, and floor stock requisitions.
- Process invoices for admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Prepare intravenous admixtures and manage sterile products, including stock intravenous solutions and irrigations.
- Adhere to established standards for clean-room procedures and activities.
- Retrieve unused medications from nursing stations.
- Process patient medication charges and make scheduled deliveries to designated stations.
- Enter charges and credits for patient medications while ensuring proper restocking of unused drugs.
- Conduct thorough inspections of medication storage areas as assigned, replacing outdated or unusable medications.
- Maintain automation equipment and perform routine maintenance.
- Record and dispose of expired medications and intravenous products.
- Check and replenish emergency response medications, including crash carts and dialysis boxes.
Outpatient Pharmacy Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide exceptional customer service to all patients.
- Accurately enter prescriptions into the pharmacy computer system.
- Assess prescriptions for completeness and accuracy.
- Utilize the Telemanager system to process telephone prescriptions and refills.
- Maintain baker-cells and conduct routine maintenance on Automated Pharmacy Systems (APS) equipment.
- Manage inventory: order, label, count, and enter data into the computer; verify incoming supplies against invoices.
- Transfer prescriptions as directed by the pharmacist.
- Process sales transactions through the pharmacy cash register and verify prescription accuracy at points of sale.
- Maintain patient profiles within the pharmacy computer system.
- Communicate with pharmacy benefit managers regarding prescription adjudication as necessary.
- Transport prescriptions and backup tapes between shifts to and from the main pharmacy.
- Liaise with prescribers to obtain refill authorizations.
- Collaborate with pharmacists to optimize workflow efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications: Inpatient Pharmacy:
- Ability to compound medications and prepare intravenous products under pharmacist supervision.
Minimum Qualifications: Outpatient Pharmacy:
- Strong customer service skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Windows.
- Attention to detail.
- Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Accurate typing skills.
Essential Functions:
- Mobility across departments and within the Medical Center, including transporting wheeled carts.
- Ability to lift and transport boxes weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Proficient in removing and replacing items from shelves at varying heights.
- Work with laminar and vertical flow hoods as required.
- Utilize basic math, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Exhibit a high degree of manual dexterity for medication preparation and management.
- Use computer systems effectively for work processes.
- Communicate proficiently with pharmacy colleagues, pharmacists, pharmacy coordinators, nursing staff, and other departments through oral, written, telephone, and computer interactions.
Working Conditions:
The position is set in a well-lit, computerized pharmacy environment, requiring standing or moving about for the majority of the shift. Responsibilities include travel to nursing stations, lifting and carrying supplies and equipment, and the possibility of accidental needle punctures during IV preparations, which is mitigated by proper techniques and safety equipment. Exposure to chemotherapy medications is present, with precautions in place to minimize associated risks.
Orientation Requirements:
Attendance at the Medical Center’s new hire and departmental orientations is mandatory.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
- Pharmacy Technician certification obtained from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or certification from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) in lieu of PTCB credentials.
- Licensed Pharmacy Technician credentialed by the Michigan Board of Pharmacy.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution is required.
- Graduation from a Pharmacy Technician program is preferred.
