Job description:
To lead the development and support of application software development teams, fostering collaboration among business and technical areas to deliver software and systems that align with or surpass business objectives. This role involves identifying, initiating, and implementing process improvements within the Information Technology (IT) Division.
The IT Manager of Application Development will be responsible for:
- Providing effective management and leadership to application developers at all levels, while building a cohesive team to support assigned enterprise systems.
- Establishing strong working relationships with business partners and IT Managers to ensure alignment and collaboration.
- Collaborating with business partners, operations personnel, vendors, system integrators, and other IT teams throughout the software development lifecycle to enhance business application development.
- Clearly communicating job expectations and service standards, setting performance expectations, encouraging efficiency, and ensuring quality in deliverables.
- Selecting, promoting, disciplining, and terminating employees in accordance with corporate policies, as well as guiding and coaching employees in their professional development.
- Managing resources effectively to align assignments with business strategies and corporate priorities, aiding in project definition, estimation, and prioritization.
- Negotiating contract terms, conditions, and pricing for software, professional services, and training solutions to support business objectives.
- Staying informed about technological advancements in application packages, best practices, development tools, and methodologies relevant to business goals.
- Facilitating open communication with the Project Management Office and other key stakeholders on corporate projects, participating in discussions regarding escalated issues as necessary.
- Monitoring workloads and making staffing recommendations to maintain a high standard of customer experience while supporting staff retention.
- Establishing and integrating departmental measures and metrics to drive performance and monitor outcomes, as well as reporting on the annual operating budget.
- Understanding the organization’s business practices and keeping abreast of current and emerging industry trends that support objective attainment.
- Acting as the technical lead on division and corporate plan projects or system outages, coordinating technical tasks in conjunction with leadership.
- Collaborating with Internal Audit on process or guideline inquiries, as needed.
- Participating in the development of departmental and division planning and strategic documents that support business objectives.
Qualifications for the IT Manager, Application Development role include:
Required:
- A Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Designations in AINS and/or FLMI are required or actively being pursued.
- One to three years of management experience, or a minimum of five years of team leadership experience.
- Knowledge of information technology concepts, techniques, and processes.
- Familiarity with the interplay between hardware, software, networks, security, and general business processes.
- General understanding of insurance company operations.
- Proven ability to cultivate and maintain constructive business relationships, with a record of successful project and staff development.
Preferred:
- Three or more years of technology leadership experience within a property/casualty or life insurance company.
