Job description:

Hiring Bonus: $500!

At Avalon, we believe that housing is a fundamental human right. Our mission is to construct healthy, safe, and inclusive supportive housing communities as a sustainable solution to homelessness.

As a non-profit provider of supportive housing, Avalon Housing combines affordable housing with essential services, including case management. Our commitment extends beyond merely helping individuals secure housing; we strive to ensure they remain in their homes and thrive.

If you are dedicated to fostering diverse, inclusive, and equitable communities where all individuals feel welcomed, Avalon may be an ideal fit for you. The residents we serve often face significant challenges, including mental health issues, substance use disorders, chronic medical conditions, and a history of persistent homelessness. Our Residential Support Specialists (RSS) serve as the frontline support staff, available 24/7. They are responsible for monitoring front desk operations, addressing tenant and visitor inquiries, and providing hands-on assistance as needed.

Key benefits provided to Avalon staff include:

  • Paid Time Off: Earned vacation time, along with additional sick and personal time allowances based on hours worked. Additionally, staff enjoy one extra paid holiday each month.
  • Medical Insurance: Part-time employees have the option to purchase life insurance, critical illness insurance, and accident insurance at competitive rates.
  • Life and Disability Plans: Employees working more than 16 hours per week receive life insurance and short-term disability coverage, with the premium costs covered by Avalon.
  • 403(b) Retirement Plan: Avalon offers a 403(b) retirement plan through Vanguard, accessible to all employees.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage visitor check-ins and check-outs, handle phone inquiries, and oversee security systems.
  • Ensure the safety and security of residents by monitoring access areas and enforcing program rules.
  • Respond to crises and emergencies, initiating necessary actions, including contacting emergency response services.
  • Coordinate services for tenants and liaise with external service providers as needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with other staff, including visiting service providers, and refer tenants to clinical and specialized staff as appropriate.
  • Initiate requests for maintenance as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, retreats, and professional development training sessions.

Supplemental Job Duties:

  • Depending on the location, RSS staff may assist tenants with daily living activities, such as transportation, meal preparation, medication management, shopping, and other hands-on support.
  • The position requires a weekly on-call shift, which is compensated at hourly rates plus a bonus.
  • Mandatory training must begin within the first 30 days of employment; some training will occur outside regular shift hours, and all training time will be compensated.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to engage positively with a diverse range of individuals in a non-judgmental manner.

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • At least one year of experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or those facing challenges related to mental illness, chronic health issues, or addiction disorders, along with educational qualifications in social or behavioral sciences or a related field.
  • Proficiency in crisis response.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competency in computer applications, including email, web browsing, and online documentation.
  • A proactive, positive attitude and a strong commitment to helping those in need.
  • Interest in and experience with individuals who may be difficult to engage, as well as knowledge of or acceptance of harm reduction principles.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands outlined here represent the requirements an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations can be made for individuals with disabilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is expected to sit for extended periods, drive a vehicle with passengers, communicate effectively with others, lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds, and operate computer hardware. A valid Michigan Chauffeur’s license and reliable transportation are mandatory.
