To enhance our team in Ann Arbor, we seek a Scientist III.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop, synthesize, analyze, and test new materials and formulations aligned with WACKER’s goals in a collaborative global team environment.
  • Advance state-of-the-art materials and formulations, generating fundamental knowledge to address technical challenges.
  • Independently contribute to interdisciplinary R&D projects targeting specific markets, demonstrating advanced expertise and introducing innovative solutions.
  • Drive technology development and implementation while showcasing strong project planning skills.
  • Stay informed of current literature and advancements in relevant fields.
  • Accurately record, analyze, interpret, and report experimental data to stakeholders.
  • Actively engage in WACKER safety programs, ensuring compliance with safety procedures, maintaining orderly laboratory conditions, and proactively suggesting improvements to existing protocols.
  • Provide technical and professional mentorship to less experienced team members.
  • Support the R&D technical manager as required.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills through presentations to internal technical colleagues, including those in R&D, Business Teams, and Production as needed.
  • Contribute to a creative R&D environment, fostering ideation and innovation discussions that lead to a robust project pipeline.

Position Qualifications:

  • Education: A minimum of a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline is required; a Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Experience: At least 7 years of relevant industrial work experience is required.
  • Proficiency in synthesis within an industrial, academic, or government research laboratory is essential, with a preference for experience in emulsion chemistry.
  • Familiarity with characterization techniques for chemical compounds, including NMR, IR, GC, DSC, DMA, TGA, and rheology, is required.
  • Experience mentoring colleagues in an industrial setting is preferred.
  • Proven expertise in the field, supported by technical publications and presentations.
  • Ability to review and interpret scientific and patent literature, contributing to internal WACKER intellectual property generation.
  • Solid understanding of laboratory safety policies and practices.
  • A self-starter with the ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Capability to lead technical projects as necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of silicone chemistry is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems and lead investigations.
