Job description:
The licensed nurse delivers clinical care to residents, addressing both their medical and physical needs to facilitate optimal functioning. The Charge Nurse assumes a leadership role, providing guidance to Care Associates while fostering the psychosocial well-being of residents through meaningful relationship-building. This position collaborates with the household team to fulfill the social needs of residents and associates, offering support, friendship, and kindness to all household members. All responsibilities of the Charge Nurse are executed in alignment with current standards, guidelines, and regulations, ensuring safe and efficient practices.
Primary Duties of a Charge Nurse (LPN or RN):
- The Charge Nurse is on duty for each shift and is responsible for overseeing all nursing activities within their assigned unit.
- Attends all staff meetings and in-service training sessions to maintain up-to-date knowledge of care standards in light of evolving regulations and procedures. Responsible for acquiring necessary information if unable to attend.
- Administers medications and treatments as prescribed, adhering to facility policies to ensure safety and timeliness.
- Measures, records, and reports resident data, including vital signs and other relevant health indicators. Capable of distinguishing between normal and abnormal resident behaviors, conducting assessments, and communicating findings to the resident’s physician and Unit Manager.
- Performs and evaluates treatments, documenting and reporting skin issues to Wound Care and the physician promptly.
- Ensures the maintenance and cleanliness of medication and treatment areas, including the medication room and Nurse’s station, while disposing of discontinued medications or treatments immediately.
- Accurately records information and conducts assessments for new admissions, readmissions, transfers, status changes, acute illnesses, or resident discharges, recognizing time constraints.
Life Enhancement Tasks:
- Actively identifies opportunities to support the social needs of all household members through companionship, friendship, and kindness.
- May engage in organizing and participating in social activities for individual residents or small groups, ensuring successful planning and execution.
- Capable of leading and participating in educational circles with residents and staff as needed.
- Ensures that associates maintain equipment and supplies necessary for resident and household activities.
- Consistently seeks opportunities to share personal interests and talents through both scheduled and spontaneous activities.
- Maintains appropriate documentation of activities and interactions.
Ancillary Tasks:
- Directs Care Associates to maintain cleanliness in resident rooms and common areas of the household.
- Arranges for the maintenance of supplies to meet the household’s resident needs.
- Supports the overall environment of the household, catering to the needs of pets, plants, children, visitors, and guests while facilitating planned and spontaneous activities.
- Coordinates with Care Associates and housekeeping staff to ensure the cleaning needs of the household are met within available resources.
- May direct associates in assisting residents with personal laundry tasks, ensuring that residents’ clothing is well-maintained.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Position-Specific Competencies:
- Graduate of a state-approved School of Nursing, holding a current Michigan license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
