Job description:
This posting is for a dual-role position as a Cabling Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Data Center Local Area Network (DCLAN) Planner.
In the capacity of Cabling SME, you will be responsible for supporting cabling requirements for the Enterprise Data Centers and various Campus Transformation projects across Southeast Michigan, which includes the opening of new buildings and the closure of existing ones. Your role will also entail providing ongoing support for the Dearborn Fiber Network (DFN). The responsibilities associated with this role will require on-site work at multiple job sites, which may include Data Center platforms, Computer Rooms, MDF/IDF closets, tunnels, construction sites, and public right-of-ways. Additionally, you will maintain cabling records and provide cable mapping support for Planners through desk work.
As a DCLAN Planner, you will coordinate planning activities for new network deployments or refresh projects within the Enterprise Data Centers that support various Hosting and Storage infrastructures, ultimately enhancing global applications and improving the end-user experience. A successful DCLAN Planner will possess a comprehensive understanding of the Enterprise Data Center environment and will make site visits as necessary. A solid grasp of network technology and cabling is crucial, along with the ability to manage the technical and logistical aspects of complex projects to ensure timely deployments. Excellent communication skills are essential to effectively translate customer requirements into actionable designs and set clear expectations for delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Network Planners on structured cabling designs and patch cable mappings for network deployments in the Enterprise Data Centers and global LAN sites.
- Manage cable inventories, customer forecasts, and custom cable orders.
- Assist in auditing structured cabling installations to ensure compliance with standards and codes.
- Troubleshoot cabling incidents and issues.
- Provide training to Network Planners, Network Operations, and UAW Trades resources on best practices for structured and patch cabling installations.
- Cultivate and manage relationships with UAW Trades staff, including communications and electrical personnel.
- Negotiate labor clearances as needed.
- Draft Scope of Work documents for UAW labor quotations, oversee installations, and maintain relationships with cabling suppliers and contractors.
- Support the ongoing operation of the Dearborn Fiber Network, including site surveys, quoting, designing, and installing both inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) constructions.
- Manage DFN circuit installations and deletions while updating fiber plan documentation and ensuring adherence to right-of-way obligations like MDOT requests and MISS DIG maintenance.
- Lead the design and implementation planning for Data Center LAN projects by:
- Communicating with various Server Hosting, Mainframe, and Storage teams to comprehend network connectivity requirements and promote compliance with Data Center standards.
- Designing logical and physical networks in accordance with approved standards and consulting with the Network Engineering team when customer requirements diverge from those standards.
- Coordinating with the Data Center Facilities team on space and power arrangements.
- Maintaining bills of materials, obtaining quotes, and ordering network hardware and cabling.
- Planning changes to network configurations in alignment with standards and the change control process and planning corresponding DNS configuration changes.
- Collaborating with Network Operations on hardware, cabling, and configuration tasks.
- Creating logical network drawings and change control documents.
- Participating in change control meetings to present project updates and address implementation issues.
- Managing project resources, timelines, and effectively communicating plans to stakeholders.
- Developing network design and process documentation in various formats, such as drawings and spreadsheets.
- Coordinating Network Refresh projects involving Cisco L2/L3 and ACI switches.
- Working alongside Network Engineering to test new network designs, hardware, and software updates.
- Conducting site surveys and generating Bills of Materials (BOM) for quotes.
- Managing the project lifecycle of installations.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Technology or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience, encompassing:
- Proficient troubleshooting and working knowledge of network and cabling systems.
- Experience with Singlemode and Multimode optical fiber and Cat-6a copper cable.
- Familiarity with Cisco IOS, NXOS, ACI, L2/L3 switch technologies, and DNS.
- Understanding of Ethernet switching technologies (1G, 10G, 25G, 40G, 100G).
- Knowledge of basic networking, TCP/IP protocols, and DNS management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, Excel, and SharePoint applications.
- Awareness of BICSI structured cabling best practices.
- Strong project management capabilities, organizational skills, attention to detail, effective communication skills, and a quality-oriented mindset.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Enterprise Data Center environments.
- Familiarity with outside plant (OSP) construction methodologies, including directional boring, trenching, and aerial installations.
- Experience utilizing OTDR and Powermeter test kits.
- Willingness to work in diverse environments, including offices, plants, construction sites, and tunnels.
- Cisco Networking Certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP).
- Cabling Certifications (e.g., RCDD).
- Project Management Certifications (e.g., PMI).
