Job description:
This job posting is for a dual-role position as a Cabling Subject Matter Expert (SME) and DCLAN Planner.

In the capacity of Cabling SME, you will be responsible for supporting cabling requirements for Enterprise Data Centers and various Campus Transformation projects across Southeast Michigan, which may include the opening and closing of buildings. This role will also involve ongoing support for the Dearborn Fiber Network. The responsibilities of the Cabling SME will entail on-site work at various job sites such as Data Center platforms, Computer Rooms, MDF/IDF closets, tunnels, construction sites, and locations within public right-of-ways. Additionally, desk work will be required to maintain cabling records and provide cable mapping support for planners.

As a DCLAN Planner, you will coordinate planning activities associated with new network deployments or refresh projects within the Enterprise Data Centers. These initiatives support various forms of Hosting and Storage infrastructure and enhance the global applications and end-user experience. An effective DCLAN Planner must possess an in-depth understanding of the Enterprise Data Center environment and will be required to visit these sites as necessary. A strong working knowledge of network technology and cabling is essential, along with the ability to manage all aspects of complex projects—both technical and logistical—to ensure timely deployments. Strong communication skills are vital for understanding customer requirements, translating them into actionable designs, setting delivery expectations, and successfully navigating the project delivery process.

Responsibilities include:

– Assisting Network Planners with structured cabling designs and patch cable mappings for network deployments in Enterprise Data Centers and global LAN sites.
– Managing cable inventories, customer forecasts, and custom cable orders.
– Assisting with audits of structured cabling installations to ensure compliance with standards and codes.
– Troubleshooting cabling incidents and issues.
– Providing training to Network Planners, Network Operations, and UAW Trades resources on best practices for structured cabling and patch cabling installations.
– Managing relationships with UAW Trades (communications, electricians) and negotiating labor clearances as needed.
– Creating Scope of Work documents for UAW labor quotes and overseeing installations.
– Managing relationships with cabling suppliers and contractors while supporting the Dearborn Fiber Network.
– Supporting site survey, quote, design, and installation for new fiber construction—both inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP).
– Processing DFN circuit installs and deletions, updating fiber plan documentation, and supporting ongoing right-of-way obligations.
– Leading design and implementation planning for Data Center LAN projects, including communicating with various Server Hosting, Mainframe, and Storage teams to understand network connectivity requirements while encouraging compliance with Data Center standards.
– Designing logical and physical network layouts according to approved standards and consulting with the Network Engineering team when customer requirements do not align with standards.
– Coordinating space and power arrangements with the Data Center Facilities team, maintaining bill-of-materials, obtaining quotes, and ordering network hardware and cabling.
– Planning changes to network configurations in accordance with standards and following change control processes, including DNS configuration changes.
– Coordinating hardware, cabling, and configuration tasks with Network Operations and creating logical network drawings and change control documents.
– Attending change control meetings to present project information and resolve implementation issues, managing project resources and timing, and communicating plans to stakeholders.
– Creating network design and process documentation in various formats and coordinating Network Refresh projects, including Cisco L2/L3 and ACI switches.
– Collaborating with Network Engineering to test new network designs, hardware, and code updates, conducting site surveys, and creating Bill of Materials for quotes.
– Project managing installations.

Qualifications for this position include:

– A bachelor’s degree in Technology or a related field.
– A minimum of 3 years of related industry experience, including:
– Working knowledge of troubleshooting skills related to network and cabling systems.
– Familiarity with Singlemode and Multimode optical fiber and Cat-6a copper cable.
– Understanding of Cisco IOS, NXOS, ACI, L2/L3 switch technologies, and DNS.
– Knowledge of Ethernet switching (1G, 10G, 25G, 40G, 100G).
– A foundational understanding of basic networking, TCP/IP protocols, and DNS.
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Visio, Excel, and SharePoint.
– Awareness of BICSI structured cabling best practices.
– Strong project management abilities, organizational skills, personal discipline, attention to detail, and effective communication skills (both written and verbal).

Preferred qualifications may include:

– Experience in Enterprise Data Center environments.
– Familiarity with outside plant (OSP) construction methods such as directional boring, trenching, and aerial work.
– Experience using OTDR and Powermeter test kits.
– A willingness to work in various environments, including offices, plants, construction sites, and tunnels.
– Cisco Networking Certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP).
– Cabling Certifications (e.g., RCDD).
– Project Management Certifications (e.g., PMI).

Even if your experience does not match all of these qualifications perfectly, we encourage you to apply if you believe you can bring value to Ford Motor Company.
