This position serves as the Food Services Shift Supervisor within a correctional facility, entrusted with overseeing the work of subordinate staff and inmate workers during food service operations. Responsibilities include managing the preparation and distribution of three daily meals, which encompass general population meals, religious meals, and therapeutic diets. The supervisor is responsible for training inmate workers and subordinate staff in quantity food service preparation, ensuring compliance with policy directives, state-wide menu guidelines, nutritional standards, and safe food handling practices, as well as maintaining sanitation and environmental and fire safety protocols. This role entails close collaboration with custody staff to uphold the safety and security of the correctional facility.
Required Education and Experience
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
Experience: A minimum of four years of experience in overseeing various quantity cooking and food preparation tasks is required, including three years equivalent to a Cook E6 or two years comparable to a Cook 7.
Alternate Education and Experience: Candidates holding an associate’s degree in dietetics, food services management, hotel, restaurant and institution management, or human nutrition, along with two years of experience in quantity cooking and food preparation (including one year equivalent to a Cook E6), may satisfy the experience requirement. Additionally, a bachelor’s degree in the aforementioned fields may substitute for the experience requirement if no relevant experience is held.
The Department of Corrections may disqualify applicants with felony convictions in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Individuals convicted of misdemeanors or felonies are ineligible for employment until the completion of their sentence, including parole or probation.

New hires, along with returning MDOC employees who have been away from the department for more than two years, will undergo Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET), encompassing either 40 or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on job classification and level of offender contact. Additional online training will also be completed to fulfill non-custody new employee training requirements.
This position is designated for drug and alcohol testing.
