Position Summary:
As a Machinist I, you will be responsible for setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control machines, as well as machining centers to fabricate both metallic and non-metallic components. This entry-level position entails assisting experienced Machinists while progressively gaining the skills to work more independently. You will operate under close supervision and adhere to established standard processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to ascertain the dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces.
- Demonstrate proficiency in following sequences of operations and setup requirements.
- Accurately measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or workpieces to guide subsequent machining.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on various machines including mills, lathes, and grinders.
- Calculate and set controls to manage machining parameters such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut.
- Enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit data in computerized machine control systems.
- Initiate and monitor machine operations, making adjustments to control settings as necessary in response to detected malfunctions or deviations from specifications.
- Verify that finished workpieces comply with established specifications.
- Conduct trial runs to ensure the accuracy of machine settings and programmed data.
- Assemble parts into complete assemblies and verify their dimensions and alignment.
- Identify worn tools and perform the installation of replacement inserts, grinding wheels, and carbide cutters, while maintaining daily preventive maintenance as needed.
- Collaborate with engineers, production staff, programmers, and others to troubleshoot and resolve machining or assembly issues.
- Experience with CNC controls such as Fanuc, Mazatrol, and Okuma OSP is preferred.
Additional Duties:
- Operate screw machines to conduct routine machining processes according to blueprints and standard work procedures.
- Utilize various measuring instruments to perform quality checks and ensure product standards.
- Load bar stock into machines or use bar loaders as necessary.
- Keep an accurate count of parts produced, meeting or exceeding production goals, and communicate any discrepancies to the Team Lead or Manager.
- Conduct all preventive maintenance and safety checks on machinery, ensuring machines are lubricated appropriately.
- Troubleshoot and address operating irregularities in machinery, seeking assistance from the Team Lead as needed.
- Maintain an organized work environment by ensuring cleanliness and orderliness at all times.
- Document production, downtime, quality records, and communicate machine status with fellow operators and management.
- Provide training and instruction on work methods, safety protocols, and equipment usage to assigned operators.
- Foster a collaborative team environment, demonstrating a willingness to work collectively to resolve challenges.
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma with up to three months of relevant workplace experience or six months of vocational/technical training; or a combination of education and experience.
- Proficient in completing work-related documents accurately.
- Basic understanding of operating principles for all plant machinery.
- Fluency in English, with the ability to read, write, and comprehend effectively.
- Capability to follow detailed written or oral instructions and manage problem-solving.
- Possess mechanical aptitude and a commitment to safety and security protocols.
