Job description:

Under general supervision, the Environmental Specialist III – Air Quality is responsible for the design, development, implementation, direction, and coordination of intricate procedures and programs aimed at promoting environmental protection, conservation, and the judicious utilization of the City’s natural resources, in adherence to federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This position encompasses specialization in one of the following areas:

Environmental Assessment and Response: This role involves managing environmental assessment, response, and remedial activity programs concerning real property owned, operated, acquired, or leased by the City of Detroit. Responsibilities include overseeing contracts related to environmental assessments and ensuring compliance with contract procurement policies between the City and its contractors.

Environmental Management Systems: The specialist will establish environmental management systems necessary for operational departments to meet or exceed compliance with relevant environmental statutes and regulations. This includes coordinating training on the identification, handling, treatment, storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous materials, solid waste, and waste oil, with a goal of implementing an ISO 14000 environmental management system.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) may be accepted as a substitute for educational requirements.
