Job description:

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the planning and execution of specialized grounds maintenance projects. The role involves assisting in the coordination of a large team of employees engaged in park maintenance activities across the city.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee district grounds maintenance operations, ensuring the successful execution of both routine and special projects by a large team.
  • Conduct field surveys and inspections, providing investigative support and resolving administrative, operational, and public relations issues.
  • Inspect ongoing projects to ensure compliance with plans, and offer advisory support to district supervisors regarding any special challenges.
  • Coordinate the allocation and transfer of personnel, materials, and equipment between districts to facilitate the timely completion of special projects.
  • Prepare new work schedules and cost estimates, ensuring fiscal responsibilities are managed effectively.
  • Assess and report on the performance of materials, equipment, and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations in the application of pesticides.
  • Develop and implement policies and standardized procedures for grounds maintenance.
  • Collaborate with divisional staff in the formulation of plans, recommending necessary adjustments or revisions.
  • Organize the logistical needs of equipment and assign drivers and maintenance personnel for special city-wide recreational events.
  • Recommend purchases of new maintenance equipment and prepare specifications for necessary materials and supplies.
  • Oversee and contribute to the development of in-service training programs for grounds maintenance personnel.
  • Supervise the testing and advancement of new materials and techniques, ensuring successful city-wide implementation.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets specific to grounds maintenance activities.
  • Compile special reports detailing work activities and personnel distribution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in grounds care and maintenance, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory role.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification with Category 6 is mandatory.
  • A valid State of Michigan Operator License is also required.
  • Candidates may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation in accordance with the requirements of the position.

Evaluation Plan:
