Job Title: Conductor – Columbus, OH 2025

Company: Norfolk Southern

Location: Columbus, OH

Pay: $25 per hour

AI Pay Analysis: An hourly rate of $25 for a “Conductor” role in Columbus, OH, in 2025 is generally considered to be on the lower end of the spectrum for this position. According to industry standards, especially given the skills required and the responsibilities involved, conductors typically earn between $30 to $45 per hour, depending on experience and the specific employer. Additionally, factors such as cost of living in Columbus and prevailing wage trends in the transportation sector further suggest that $25 may not be competitive. Therefore, while this rate may attract some entry-level candidates, it might struggle to retain experienced professionals or attract qualified applicants in an increasingly competitive job market.

Job description:

Norfolk Southern (NS) is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Train Conductors in Columbus, OH, for the year 2025. In this crucial role, you will ensure the safe and efficient movement of freight trains. The position involves various responsibilities, including coupling railcars to form trains, delivering railcars to local customers, and transporting trains over long distances. Please note that this role may require a significant lifestyle adjustment, as the work schedule is non-traditional, often requiring availability on short notice of 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Before applying, we invite you to view a brief video that outlines the roles and responsibilities of a conductor.

Responsibilities:

  • Prioritize safety to guarantee the secure transport of freight.
  • Safely connect and disconnect railcars to assemble and disassemble trains according to specified configurations.
  • Deliver railcars to local customers, ensuring safe, timely, and accurate service.
  • Transport trains safely over long distances.
  • Maintain clear communication with crew members, dispatchers, and relevant personnel to coordinate activities and respond to instructions.
  • Adhere to a non-traditional work schedule with the flexibility to be called on short notice.

Compensation:

  • Conductor Trainees (CT) will receive $25 per hour during training, with a minimum guarantee of $200 per shift.
  • Conductors can expect to earn an average of $75,000 in their first year post-training.
  • Experienced Conductors average $85,000 annually.
  • Opportunities for promotion to Locomotive Engineer are available, based on location needs and seniority.
  • Locomotive Engineers have a minimum income guarantee of approximately $94,000, with the potential to exceed $100,000.

Training:

  • Participants will undergo a comprehensive 4-7 month training program that includes both Classroom and On-The-Job (OJT) Training.
  • Conductor Trainees are required to successfully complete training and obtain a Conductors License.
  • The first three weeks of employment will take place at the NS Training Center in McDonough, GA. Candidates are responsible for their own transportation to the area. Norfolk Southern will provide hotel accommodations, mileage reimbursement, and a meal stipend during this training period. The remainder of the training will be conducted at or near the hiring location.

Work Schedule:

  • Schedules are irregular and determined by business needs.
  • Many positions require on-call availability 24/7, with notice provided 90 minutes to 2 hours when not on scheduled days off.
  • Employees will receive a minimum of two rest days for every six consecutive workdays.
  • Expect routine time away from home, typically for 1-2 days at a time.

As a Conductor Trainee, you will likely follow a schedule similar to that of regular conductors, typically assigned to a conductor’s extra board. Extra boards have irregular work schedules, again dependent on business requirements. You must be ready to report to your work location on a short notice basis, emphasizing the necessity of reliable transportation.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive medical insurance for employees, spouses, and eligible dependents starts on the first day of the second calendar month of employment.
  • After one year of service, eligibility for dental insurance, a $20,000 life insurance plan, and participation in the Norfolk Southern 401(K) plan is available.
  • Employees contribute to Railroad Retirement taxes, which align with Social Security taxes, plus an additional 4.9%. Railroad Retirement benefits are offered, and upon completion of the service requirement, employees will be eligible for those benefits.
  • Conductors can qualify for up to five weeks of paid time off based on work record and seniority.

Additional details regarding benefits may be found at our company resources.
