Job description:
The Director of Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC) serves as the senior leader responsible for the comprehensive planning, organization, management, and supervision of all facets of the DACC. Reporting to the Associate Director, the Director will ensure that field and shelter services are coordinated effectively, operate efficiently, and adhere to City of Detroit, State, and Federal regulations, as well as industry best practices. Key responsibilities include safeguarding public safety, ensuring humane sheltering, fostering community education, and implementing enforcement best practices consistently.
The Director will develop strategic staffing plans to meet both organizational and City objectives, as well as ensure adherence to established policies and procedures. A critical aspect of the role involves empowering staff to implement strategies and assignments effectively and punctually. With a wide range of responsibilities, the successful candidate must possess a robust understanding of animal care and control best practices, alongside a wealth of operational and administrative knowledge across areas such as Human Resources, Employee Relations, Budget and Finance, Information Technology, Facilities Management, enforcement of State statutes and City ordinances, and community engagement.

Minimum Qualifications
Job Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have experience in a senior leadership role within an Animal Care & Control facility, with a demonstrated history of working collaboratively with organizational, political, and community leaders, as well as frontline staff.
Job Prerequisites:
Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. A valid Michigan driver’s license and access to a vehicle during work hours are required.
Emergency Preparedness Training:
Candidates must complete Emergency Preparedness training, including but not limited to FEMA ISC 100, 200, 700, and 800, as mandated by department staff.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position will supervise the Veterinarian and other positions as designated by the Associate Director and DHD Director.
Additional Responsibilities:
Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
Education & Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.
- A minimum of five years’ experience leading an animal care and control department of similar scale and complexity is required.
Equivalency:
Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
