Job description:

An Intelligence Specialist serves as a crucial resource and information gatherer dedicated to direct crime prevention and the enhancement of crime investigation and suppression efforts. This professional is tasked with conducting research utilizing law enforcement systems, open-source data, and department technologies to facilitate fugitive apprehension tracking, person-of-interest assessments, phone data analysis, warrant package preparation, and any additional responsibilities that support the department’s mission to reduce crime and enhance community safety. The position reports to the Commanding Officer of the Crime Intelligence Unit or their designated representative. Intelligence Specialists may operate across multiple department facilities or partner locations depending on assigned tasks.

Examples of Duties:

  • Leverage diverse sources and technologies to mine and collect data, subsequently converting the information into computerized formats for manipulation and analysis. Conduct strategic crime analyses to identify trends and patterns that can prevent criminal activity, providing actionable recommendations.
  • Analyze criminal intelligence and prepare comprehensive reports and bulletins, evaluating long-term crime patterns and trends to forecast potential future criminal activities.
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with federal, state, local, and private entities to facilitate the exchange of information pertinent to counter-terrorism initiatives.
  • Participate in critical incident debriefings, both pre- and post-incident, including tabletop exercises with team members and partner agencies.
  • Act as a resource on investigative teams, offering support to lead officers on specific cases.
  • Undertake essential infrastructure information gathering and reporting on locations, events, and individuals that may pose a risk for terrorist activities when required.
  • Utilize gathered information to strategically plan resource deployment for crime prevention and suppression, assisting in investigations, increasing apprehensions, clearing cases, and analyzing data to identify commonalities and trends among various offenses.
  • Coordinate the exchange of interstate and intrastate criminal information and movement; communicate and collaborate effectively with other departments and agencies.
  • Investigate the relationships between offenders and incidents to enhance overall intelligence; research patterns, structures, trends, and movements of criminal organizations or individuals, formulating recommendations for further investigations and drafting analytical reports with supportive charts and maps.
  • Research, compile, and interpret data and criminal intelligence from multiple sources, including prior investigations, legal documents, information retrieval systems, and social media.
  • Prepare analytical reports on intelligence information, interpreting and presenting findings to superiors in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ensure timely notifications based on thorough research and analysis of data from departmental and external agency reports.
  • Employ and maintain general and specialized computer applications for gathering, categorizing, and analyzing crime data to facilitate information dissemination relevant to law enforcement activities.
  • Disseminate intelligence information to bolster the prevention and detection of criminal activities.
  • Engage in meetings to discuss police mission strategies and share intelligence information.
  • Provide recommendations concerning emerging trends, methods, and technologies.
  • Offer assistance to the unit and across the department in efforts aimed at crime control.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in intelligence analysis, criminal justice, cybersecurity, or a related field, or a minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement experience in lieu of a degree. Candidates must possess at least five (5) years of experience in crime analysis, investigative analysis, and the practical application of investigative principles for crime suppression or apprehension. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered to meet the necessary requirements for this position.
