Job description:
This position entails the coordination, planning, and supervision of operations for athletic facilities and events, including oversight of the Student Center and Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Assistant Director ensures seamless execution of events, compliance with facility and affiliation regulations, and the efficient utilization of resources. Key responsibilities encompass managing daily operations, coordinating maintenance activities, and supervising staff, all while upholding the University’s mission, vision, and values with a robust commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities include leading day-to-day management and oversight of the student center and athletic facilities, overseeing the organization of every aspect of game day event management, including the coordination of services, resources, and personnel for athletic contests. The role involves coordinating maintenance of athletic facilities in collaboration with external vendors and the University’s facilities team, as well as overseeing technical systems used for game day operations, troubleshooting as necessary.

The Assistant Director will supervise the scheduling of athletic facilities for practices, games, and external events hosted by the University, while developing and managing year-round practice schedules. This position is responsible for creating and implementing programming designed to generate revenue from the utilization of athletic facilities and the Student Center, which includes managing external camps, rentals, and special events.

Additionally, the Assistant Director coordinates all external camps hosted at the student center and athletic facilities, managing facility logistics for internal camps and leading the external camps committee while facilitating communication with relevant campus departments. Responsibilities extend to the hiring, training, development, evaluation, and management of all workers employed at the student center and athletic facilities, including student workers.

The development and adjustment of facility hours of operation, ensuring adequate staffing levels to support seamless operations, is also a key responsibility. The Assistant Director will contribute to the formulation of best practices and operational improvements within the athletic department, conduct regular inspections to identify and address maintenance needs, and work closely with University facilities to coordinate necessary maintenance and repairs.

Furthermore, this role includes managing the annual operating and capital budgets for the facilities, encompassing staffing, equipment, and supplies. The Assistant Director will assist the Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics with various athletic-related issues as needed and must understand and adhere to all external and internal regulations and policies, including those by the NCAA, GLIAC, and nationally related affiliations.

The position requires delivering exceptional customer service, actively anticipating and exceeding the needs of customers, while demonstrating and promoting the University’s Cultural Values.

Qualifications for this role include a bachelor’s degree, with a master’s degree in recreation, sports management, or physical education preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in the administration and management of campus recreation, athletic training, and fitness facility operations is required. Knowledge of proper safety procedures and regulations relevant to the position, along with technical proficiency in operating and troubleshooting sound systems and scoreboards used in game day operations, is essential.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team. Proficiency in computerized data systems, including the internet, Microsoft Office Suite, and Publisher is necessary. The ability to effectively engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering a cooperative and positive environment is critical, as is the capacity to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff while maintaining confidentiality.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, both written and oral, are required, along with the ability to perform under pressure and travel as needed. The role may involve occasional lifting of items up to 75 pounds.
