Job description:

The school nurse is responsible for overseeing the emotional, mental, physical, and social health of students and staff. The role involves delivering essential health services to K-12 students throughout the school day and managing chronic health conditions such as asthma, food allergies, diabetes, and seizures that require special care. The school nurse collaborates with school personnel to manage the administration of medications prescribed by healthcare providers and works closely with parents, teachers, administrators, and other staff to develop and implement care plans. Additionally, the nurse connects students and their families to community resources to ensure comprehensive support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver both population-based and individualized care while actively engaging with healthcare providers.
  • Develop and oversee individualized healthcare plans and emergency plans for students with healthcare needs (e.g., Epi-Pen, Glucagon, and Diastat).
  • Ensure preparedness planning and compliance by utilizing best practices.
  • Prepare plans for addressing the healthcare needs of the school community in emergencies, such as disasters or lockdown situations.
  • Facilitate both emergency and routine medication administration.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians, teachers, and physicians regarding medication effectiveness for students with health conditions such as ADHD, diabetes, asthma, and sickle cell disease.
  • Coordinate and provide training for treatments of children with specialized healthcare requirements, including tracheostomy care and intravenous medication administration.
  • Train school staff on appropriate treatments, disease management, and emergency response protocols.
  • Respond to school-related emergencies, including accidents on the playground or school buses, ensuring the health and safety of students and staff.
  • Provide care for students experiencing seizures.
  • Collaborate with external agencies to coordinate dental, scoliosis, vision, and hearing screenings.
  • Attend parent/guardian conferences or IEP/504 meetings when student health concerns impact learning, offering consultation for care plans.
  • Deliver supplemental classroom instruction and materials on various health-related topics.
  • Offer one-on-one health counseling to students.
  • Provide school health services in both in-person and remote formats.
  • Act as a resource for families seeking support from community or social agencies.
  • Promote and assist in diverse educational initiatives addressing social, mental, and health needs.
  • Play a pivotal role in planning and executing a safe return to in-person learning as needed.

Salary and benefits are offered in the range of $55,000 to $62,000, commensurate with experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package. The position requires a commitment of 186 working days over a 10-month period, with hours from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, including a 30-minute lunch break. The ideal start date is as soon as possible.
