The Food Services Shift Supervisor plays a vital role within a correctional facility, responsible for overseeing the work of subordinate staff and prisoner workers during food service operations. Key responsibilities include managing the preparation and serving of three daily meals, encompassing general population meals, religious meals, and therapeutic diets. This position requires direct supervision of subordinate staff as well as training prisoner workers in large-scale food preparation and meal serving, while strictly adhering to policy directives, state-wide menus, operating procedures, nutritional standards, and safety protocols regarding food handling and sanitation. Working collaboratively with custody staff, this role also prioritizes the safety and security of the correctional facility.

Required Education and Experience:

Education: A high school diploma is typically required.

Experience: Candidates should possess four years of experience in managing various aspects of quantity cooking and food preparation, comparable to the role of a Cook. This includes three years at the level of Cook E6 or two years at the level of Cook 7.

Alternate Education and Experience:

  • An associate’s degree in dietetics, food services management, hotel and restaurant management, or human nutrition combined with two years of overseeing quantity cooking and food preparation tasks, including one year equivalent to Cook E6, may substitute for the experience requirement.
  • A bachelor’s degree in the same fields may also satisfy the experience requirement if no prior experience is held.

Additional Requirements and Information:

The Michigan Department of Corrections reserves the right to screen applicants with felony convictions in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants with any misdemeanor or felony convictions are ineligible for employment with the Department until they have satisfactorily completed their sentence, including parole or probation.

Employment within the state classified service requires a strong commitment to ethical standards, ensuring the integrity of state operations and the effective delivery of services. All employees must adhere to these standards and are required to report any potential conflicts of interest.

New employees, as well as individuals returning to the MDOC after an absence of more than two years, will participate in Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET), consisting of either 40 or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification, followed by additional online training.
