Job description:
Supports the kitchen operations by ensuring the proper and safe handling, holding, serving, and storage of food, while maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment. This part-time position offers a starting rate of $16.00 per hour.
Responsibilities
- Assist the department and staff in delivering safe, visually appealing, and appropriately portioned food.
- Restock the food line, including paper supplies and stockware.
- Collaborate with the cook, dishwasher, and stock worker to facilitate smooth kitchen operations.
- Oversee the flow of the food line, ensuring correct food handling and portion sizes.
- Provide support to volunteers while addressing client needs and accommodating special meal requests.
- Ensure that the serving line is properly set up and that all food items are held and served at the appropriate temperatures.
- Maintain cleanliness in the serving area and manage the storage or disposal of any food leftovers that cannot be re-served.
- Sign invoices for incoming deliveries in the absence of the Director, Inventory Stock Person, or Cook.
- Uphold cleanliness standards in the kitchen area, including equipment and shelves throughout and at the end of each assigned shift.
- Seal, date, and store leftover food items according to regulatory guidelines.
- Unload and organize stock upon arrival of shipments as needed.
- Adhere to uniform requirements, including wearing hair coverings, appropriate footwear, and gloves when handling food.
- Perform additional duties as requested by the Food Service Manager or the HLC Executive Director.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Entry-level kitchen experience is preferred.
- A minimum of 6 months of experience in food volume production or culinary/hospitality training is desirable.
- Ability to routinely lift and carry boxes weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Capability to navigate stairs when necessary, including during building evacuations, drills, or elevator maintenance.
- Familiarity with kitchen equipment and its proper use.
- Required to stand for extended periods throughout the scheduled shift.
- Ability to withstand high temperatures for prolonged periods.
- Proficient in handling knives, sharp objects, cleaning chemicals, and managing various noise levels.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills when dealing with the public and/or individuals who may be intoxicated.
- Maintains a positive outlook concerning the programs, staff, and mission of The Salvation Army.
- Communicates using respectful language, tone, and body language while exhibiting pro-social thoughts and behaviors.
