Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition Environmental Justice Fellows
These positions are part of the Climate Resilience Regional Challenge (CRRC) projects. The selected fellows will contribute to this initiative by engaging with African American and other residents in the cities of Lorain, Elyria, Akron, Youngstown-Warren, and the Cleveland metropolitan area. The counties involved align with the project’s focus and include Summit, Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Mahoning, and Trumbull. One fellow will primarily concentrate on Ashtabula, Lorain, Medina, Cuyahoga, and Summit counties, while the second fellow will focus on Trumbull, Geauga, Lake, and Mahoning counties.
The Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition recognizes the importance of cultivating talent from underserved communities to address the challenges of coastal resilience. We are in search of fellows who demonstrate a commitment to tackling the effects of structural social, economic, and environmental disparities impacting education, employment, housing, and health. These fellows will serve as the next generation of leaders and decision-makers in the evolving domains of conservation, community development, and resilience.

Fellow responsibilities will include:
1. Ensuring that research, training, education, technical assistance, and decision-support activities align with and enhance the project, “Building Resilience to Extreme Weather in Northeast Ohio,” focusing particularly on assisting communities most impacted by climate change.
2. Serving as experts in coastal resilience and community engagement, collaborating with outreach teams to strengthen existing programs and develop innovative initiatives.
3. Taking a leadership role in promoting data-driven research and advocating for informed behavioral, policy, and management decisions related to coastal resilience within the community.
4. Creating programs and materials that engage a wide audience, including community members, state and federal agencies, elected officials, businesses, educators, and NGOs, while collaborating with agencies such as NOAA to expand outreach.
5. Building on existing partnerships and establishing new collaborations regionally.
6. Identifying leadership opportunities within the program while actively seeking external roles in partner organizations.
7. Aiding in the development of grant proposals and serving as key personnel for initiatives that address local and targeted community needs.
8. Conducting research to fill knowledge gaps and address community needs.
9. Communicating complex issues effectively to non-experts.
10. Collaborating to enhance outreach and educational components of their projects.
11. Leading a variety of educational and outreach initiatives, including presentations, workshops, and community engagement events.
12. Exploring new opportunities to expand outreach programming locally, regionally, and nationally.
13. Evaluating the Coalition’s products and programs to assess impact, identify areas for improvement, and fulfill reporting requirements.
14. Raising public awareness of “Building Resilience to Extreme Weather in Northeast Ohio” and serving as a reliable source of information on Great Lakes policies and issues.
15. Enhancing public understanding of issues related to Lake Erie and the Great Lakes.
16. Participating in professional development activities to stay informed about coastal resilience and related social and economic topics, as well as Lake Erie science.
17. Actively engaging in relevant professional societies.
18. Representing the Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition on regional advisory boards and planning committees.
19. Working independently while situated in northeast Ohio.
Potential deliverables include:
– A comprehensive report summarizing research findings related to knowledge gaps and community needs.
– Completed assessments for community-based organizations, counties, and selected municipalities.
– Presentations for the Advisory Board on pertinent topics.
Anticipated travel includes visiting communities within the project service area, with one fellow focusing on Ashtabula, Lorain, Medina, Cuyahoga, and Summit counties, while the other will concentrate on Trumbull, Geauga, Lake, and Mahoning counties. Fellows are also required to attend a peer-to-peer sharing event in 2027, and the Coalition will allocate funds for their professional development.
