Job description:
To plan, organize, and implement public health education programs within the County, while also performing related duties as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify community health concerns and assist in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating relevant health programs.
- Actively participate in public health quality initiatives, such as Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control.
- Ensure adherence to the accreditation requirements set forth by the State of Michigan.
- Collaborate with community leaders, groups, and volunteers to effectively address issues impacting vulnerable populations.
- Support the development of data for use in newsletters, web content, and other educational materials.
- Coordinate performance management activities related to the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB).
- Attend community meetings concerning PHAB items and assist with St. Clair County Health Department grant processes, including research, application development, and reporting.
- Consult with supervisory staff to create marketing strategies for department programs and services.
- Prepare, edit, and distribute information regarding health education, promotion, and departmental programs through various media channels, including social media, websites, press releases, print materials, and display boards.
- Create and edit promotional documents, photographs, and videos for reporting and documenting events.
- Ensure the integrity and clarity of departmental information presented to both internal and external audiences.
- Research data, statistics, and health information, and communicate this information in a manner that is accessible to targeted audiences.
- Assist in planning and organizing health education programming tailored to meet community needs.
- Participate in coalitions and initiatives led by the health department.
- Aid the community in recognizing health challenges and organizing solutions.
- Foster and maintain collaborative relationships among agencies contributing to health education.
- Provide consultation and guidance to groups and individuals seeking to enhance their health education activities.
- Engage in community-wide collaborative initiatives related to public health and safety.
- Contribute to improving the quality of health education for school children and the broader population.

Work is conducted under the supervision of the Health Department Director of Health Education and Planning.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
May oversee the activities of clerical support staff and Health Education student interns.
Experience, Skills, and Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Public Health/Health Education, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in public health education is preferred.
- Certification as a Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Master CHES (MCHES) is preferred.
- Strong skills in marketing, design, and creativity, particularly in producing brochures, flyers, newsletters, displays, and social media content using graphics software.
- Excellent public speaking and presentation abilities.
- Experience participating in community coalitions or workgroups.
- Comprehensive knowledge in developing publications and educational materials.
- In-depth knowledge of public health education and planning principles, including administrative methods, community organization, and evaluation techniques.
- Familiarity with school health programs and related instructional practices.
- Knowledge of personal and public health, including communicable diseases and health promotion strategies.
- Understanding of current social and economic disparities affecting public health.
- Ability to collect and analyze demographic and biostatistical data.
- Familiarity with community health assessment principles.
