LAW DEPARTMENT
SENIOR ASSISTANT CORPORATION COUNSEL
TRANSACTION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
We serve as legal representatives for the City of Detroit in all civil actions. Established by the Detroit City Charter, the Law Department operates as an independent agency dedicated to advocating for the city as a corporate entity. The department is led by the Corporation Counsel, who is tasked with providing a diverse range of legal services to the City, its elected officials, departments, agencies, offices, commissions, boards, and individual employees acting in their official capacities.
Our team comprises numerous attorneys with specialized knowledge in various legal areas, offering legal advice, opinions, and counsel to clients. We defend all legal actions against the City, prosecute violations of State Law and City Ordinances on behalf of the citizens, and assist in drafting City ordinances and other legal documents, including all transactional and contractual agreements that legally bind the City.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may include other tasks as assigned) include:
- Preparation, review, and negotiation of contracts for goods and services, grants, and fiscal sponsorships.
- Drafting and negotiating agreements for the acquisition, conveyance, and development of real property.
- Providing guidance on zoning, land use, environmental, regulatory, and administrative law issues.
- Advising on the management and maintenance of the City’s real estate portfolio.
- Serving as counsel to various City boards and commissions.
- Undertaking special projects as directed by superiors.
- Delivering case status reports to the Corporation Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications (required):
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited American Bar Association institution.
- Membership in the State Bar of Michigan.
- A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient in legal research techniques, particularly as they pertain to municipal corporation law.
- Familiarity with legal subjects and applicable State and Federal statutes associated with municipal corporation law.
- Comprehensive understanding of municipal codes and ordinances.
- Expertise in legal writing and drafting.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Capacity to exercise independent judgment, maturity, and proactivity in managing legal matters.
- Ability to maintain a judicial temperament and poise.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
