Job description:
Under the supervision of the Youth Center Director, this role is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of residents, visitors, and staff within the detention facility. The position involves supervising, guiding, and counseling high-risk residents through daily activities as part of the residential and educational programs.
Essential Functions:
– Provide close supervision of residents to ensure security measures are upheld, including conducting security checks, performing resident counts, conducting room inspections, and monitoring security cameras.
– Observe residents for any behavioral changes that may indicate potential medical, behavioral, or mental health crises, following facility guidelines and alerting appropriate staff as needed.
– Facilitate group and individualized therapeutic interventions using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Behavioral Therapy (RBT), psychoeducation, and social skills training. Implement mindfulness interventions to enhance sensory processing, emotional, and cognitive regulation, within a trauma-informed framework.
– Assess and intervene in behavioral and mental health crises as per policy and procedure guidelines, including the use of physical and mechanical restraints or other appropriate actions. Report serious disciplinary incidents to the Shift Supervisor or Director.
– Operate and monitor electronic security and communication equipment, including control panels, intercoms, computers, visual monitors, electronic doors, sound detectors, alarms, and security fencing. Maintain awareness of the weather alert system and provide backup for general telephone lines at the Youth Center. Distribute and account for facility keys at the end of each shift.
– Organize and lead group recreational activities such as games, arts and crafts, gym events, and outdoor pursuits. Develop and instruct programs in weight lifting, music, and other recreational and educational activities.

– Respond to medical emergencies, administer first aid, dispense authorized medications, and ensure adherence to nutritional requirements and medical treatments as prescribed. Assist with after-hours emergency medical care and coordinate the transportation of residents for medical, dental, and psychiatric appointments. Provide 24-hour monitoring for acute residents admitted to the facility.
– Serve as a positive role model and offer informal one-on-one counseling to support residents in decision-making processes. Engage in discussions on various concerns, acting as an empathetic listener and referring residents to the Youth Center Psychologist when appropriate.
– Conduct resident intake processes, gathering necessary information, screening for contraband, assessing health concerns and potential for self-harm, and orienting residents to Youth Center policies and procedures.
– Escort and monitor residents and visitors during visitation and hearings, assisting supervisors with resident phone calls and video conferences.
– Oversee, assist, and provide guidance to community volunteers. Participate in the training of new staff and substitutes, offering input on safety and security practices for cooks, custodians, and teachers.

Employment Qualifications:
Education/Experience:

– Alternatively, a minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent education with at least three years of experience working with delinquent or emotionally troubled youths and/or families, which may include intern or volunteer experience.
