Duties
THIS IS A TITLE 5 EXCEPTED NATIONAL GUARD POSITION
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician-Basic Life Support) assigned to a crew responsible for airfield and structural firefighting as well as crash-rescue operations. The incumbent will operate firefighting vehicles with significant complexity to respond to and control hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents, while also performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures.

  1. Conducts hazard and risk assessments, carrying out comprehensive incident analyses. Performs immediate incident surveys to accurately identify hazardous materials involved, determines specifics of any released HAZMAT, analyzes surrounding conditions, predicts material behavior, and recommends appropriate mitigation strategies, ensuring safety to individuals and the environment.
  2. Provides Basic Life Support by implementing established medical protocols. Responsibilities include conducting patient assessments, maintaining airway, breathing, and circulation, prioritizing care, monitoring vital signs, performing CPR and automatic external defibrillation (AED), controlling external bleeding, and assisting in administering emergency medications under physician orders. Maintains communication with receiving facilities, ensuring all patient information is accurately relayed, and prepares relevant patient care documentation while maintaining emergency equipment and supplies.
  3. Drives and operates firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles, to respond to incidents, positioning vehicles strategically based on situational factors such as wind direction and environmental hazards.
  4. Executes crash-rescue and firefighting duties during air traffic operations, where risk of fire is elevated due to the presence of aircraft carrying substantial quantities of fuel or hazardous materials.
  5. Performs structural firefighting duties across various facilities, including multi-story buildings and industrial areas, often involving materials capable of producing toxic, biological, or radiological hazards.
  6. Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities, conducting functional tests and inspections as well as preventative maintenance on equipment.

  • This is a Testing Designated Position; employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • The position involves work under adverse environmental conditions and is subject to respiratory and hearing conservation programs.
  • Ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth is required.
  • May require participation in the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC) and on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).
  • Duties associated with operating aircraft arresting barrier equipment may also be required.
  • The maximum entry age for this position is 37 years old.

    6. Development, implementation, or delivery of training in fire protection and prevention.
    7. Theories and techniques of firefighting and fire prevention.
    8. Operation of fixed and mobile firefighting equipment.
    9. Planning and directing fire protection and prevention programs and operations.
    10. Providing emergency medical services.

Education
To qualify for this position, applicants must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification System as an Airport Firefighter (including Firefighter I and II), Hazmat Operations (including Hazmat Awareness), HazMat Technician, National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or State EMT, as well as obtain required apparatus driver operator certifications.
