Job description:
The Ann Arbor Police Department seeks to hire PSS Cadets on a temporary basis, with the goal of enabling them to attend a police academy and subsequently transition into the role of Ann Arbor Police Officers upon successful completion of the academy. This PSS Cadet position offers applicants valuable insights into the operations and culture of the Ann Arbor Police Department prior to assuming the responsibilities of a sworn officer.

The PSS Cadet Program is designed for non-licensed (pre-academy) candidates. Those selected for this role will undergo an evaluation period lasting up to 12 months. During this time, PSS Cadets will manage the front desk operations, engaging with the public, conducting preliminary investigations for reports, completing traffic crash reports, administering preliminary breath tests, and handling the fingerprinting and photographing of arrestees/defendants for court proceedings.

Upon successful completion of the assimilation period, PSS Cadets will attend a regional police academy. The City will cover all tuition and associated costs related to the academy, excluding room, board, and meals. Following the successful graduation from the academy, PSS Cadets will be appointed to entry-level police officer positions and must complete the Ann Arbor Police Department’s field training officer program.

Minimum Qualifications:

– Candidates must be 21 years of age or older by the commencement of the Field Training Officer (FTO) program, set to begin approximately 10 months from the date of hire
– A minimum of 45 credit hours from an accredited educational institution
