Job description:
The Institution Chaplain is tasked with the comprehensive planning, coordination, and management of all religious programming within the Parnall Correctional Facility. Responsibilities include the scheduling and oversight of services, volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision, as well as the planning and supervision of religious special events. The role also involves providing pastoral counseling, managing religious purchases and orders, identifying suitable religious vendors, and serving as a religious resource for facility staff. As the acknowledged expert in this domain, the Institutional Chaplain brings extensive experience in program development and implementation.

Required Education and Experience
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in religious studies, theology, divinity, or in a human services-related field such as guidance and counseling, social work, or criminal justice is required.
Experience:
- Institution Chaplain 9: No specific type or amount of experience is required.
- Institution Chaplain 10: One year of professional experience as a religious leader in either community or institutional settings, at a level equivalent to an Institution Chaplain 9.
- Institution Chaplain P11: Two years of professional experience as a religious leader, including one year at the level of Institution Chaplain 10.
- Institution Chaplain 12: Three years of professional experience as a religious leader, including one year at the level of Institution Chaplain P11.
Alternate Education and Experience: An Associate’s degree in religious studies or human services, combined with two years (4,160 hours) of experience performing various religious services, may substitute for the education requirement across all Chaplain levels (9-12).
Additional Requirements and Information:
Candidates must possess certification or endorsement from an officially recognized body within their religious faith. Some positions may mandate specific faith credentials for consideration. The Michigan Department of Corrections will not employ individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have pending felony charges, in strict compliance with Public Act 140 of 1996. The Department may exclude job applicants with felony convictions in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017, and such applicants will be ineligible for employment until completing their sentence, including parole or probation.
