Job description:

Produce and maintain comprehensive building permitting and inspection documentation in accordance with the Michigan Building Code 2015 and the Charter Township of Lyon’s Code of Ordinances. Serve as a point of contact for residents, tenants, contractors, and local businesses to address construction and property-related inquiries promptly and effectively. This role includes acting as a resource for internal and external requests for documentation, reports, and data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Documentation Management:

    • Generate and uphold thorough building permitting and inspection documents. A solid understanding of construction processes and sequences is essential to accurately evaluate permit applications, schedule inspections, and address any failed inspections. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are critical for effectively managing the plan review process. Precision and attention to detail are fundamental in fee calculation and invoicing. Exceptional customer service skills and a strong work ethic are non-negotiable.
  • Delivery Scope Includes, but is Not Limited to:

    • Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing Permits
    • Scheduling Inspections and inputting inspection results
    • Summarizing, organizing, and distributing the daily inspection schedule
  • Problem Resolution:

    • Facilitate the swift resolution of construction and property-related issues with a focus on efficient problem-solving. Robust knowledge of construction processes and effective communication skills, both internally and externally, are essential. Deliver superior customer service and maintain a diligent work ethic. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
    • Resolving failed inspections
    • Addressing expired permits
    • Managing resident and contractor complaints
  • Information Resource:

    • Act as a reference for data, reports, and documentation requests. Deliverables may include, but are not limited to:
    • Archival documentation
    • Inspection histories
    • Attendance at meetings as required
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Perform essential administrative tasks such as answering phones, managing mail, and handling filing and scanning needs.

Technical Proficiency Required:

  • Proficient in BS&A software and reporting functions
  • Familiarity with Outlook, Property Gateway, Laserfiche, Excel, and Word

Customer Service Skills:

  • Demonstrate outstanding customer service and professionalism at all times
  • Ability to multitask
  • Deadline-oriented with a focus on creative problem-solving

Education and Experience:

  • An Associate’s Degree is preferred or related municipal experience
  • A high school diploma or GED with a minimum of three years of progressive experience in a building department, construction industry, or municipal setting.
