Based in northwest Michigan, Northern Building Supply is recognized as the region’s premier supplier of premium building materials, serving both contractors and homeowners. We operate two full-service lumber yards and provide a diverse selection of high-quality specialty products, including windows, doors, cabinets, decking, and both interior and exterior trim.
The role involves delivering materials to job sites, conducting inspections and maintenance on trucks, reporting shortages and claims to the supervisor, and assisting with the loading and storage of materials. This position typically requires a less experienced CDL or tractor trailer driver.
Pay Range: $20-$26/hour
Essential Job Duties:
- Maintain a current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License as required.
- Prepare DOT-mandated logs detailing time on duty and driving.
- Organize and secure loads while assisting forklift operators during loading.
- Account for all company funds, including C.O.D. transactions.
- Verify order accuracy and ensure timely delivery and unloading of materials to customers’ satisfaction.
- Complete daily pre-inspection of equipment.
- Record all merchandise returned by truck and assist in unloading materials returned for credit.
- Adhere to Department of Transportation guidelines, operate equipment safely and efficiently, and maintain accurate records regarding equipment use and time charged.
- Log deliveries on the supervisor’s log sheet.
- Engage with customers during the loading process.
- Convey messages from customers while on site.
- Assist supervisors and colleagues in various tasks as assigned, contributing to maintaining cleanliness and order in the yard and warehouse.
- Comply with company attendance policies by maintaining consistent attendance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A minimum of a High School Diploma or general equivalency degree (GED) is required.
- At least 6 months of CDL experience, including experience with lumber dumping.
- Basic CDL experience with flat beds and/or tractor trailers is necessary.
- Proficient in arithmetic, with the ability to read orders, write instructions, and complete forms.
- Effective communication skills to interact with customers, colleagues, and supervisors through verbal and written means, employing safe lifting techniques.
- A clean driving record and current CDL operator’s license, along with valid DOT qualifications, are mandatory.
- Physical demands of the role include stooping, bending, twisting, and throwing, and working in various climates and environmental conditions. The ability to lift 100 lbs or more repetitively is required.
