The Life Enrichment Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the life enrichment program in the Terrace and Courtyard, working under the supervision of the Life Enrichment Coordinator. This position requires independent leadership in organizing and conducting activities for residents. Availability and hours for Life Enrichment Assistants are contingent upon occupancy levels and require approval from the Controller of Heritage Property Management.

Candidates for the Life Enrichment Assistant position will be selected based on a variety of important qualifications, including a positive and respectful approach towards individuals with dementia. The ideal candidate will exhibit maturity and demonstrate effective coping strategies in response to job demands. Relevant education and experience with frail elderly populations, particularly those with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, are essential. Coursework or professional experience in gerontology is highly regarded. Candidates must possess compassion for serving the elderly and demonstrate innovative and creative problem-solving skills. Additionally, proficiency in reading and writing, the ability to follow directions, and successful clearance of state-mandated criminal background checks and random drug testing are mandatory.

The essential functions of the Life Enrichment Assistant include:
1. Familiarity with the GEMS: Positive Approach to Dementia Care methodology.
2. Establishing GEM boxes for resident engagement specifically tailored for individuals with dementia.
3. Facilitating direct interaction with residents in individual, small group, and large group settings within the Terrace and Courtyard areas.
4. Planning and leading enriching activities, which may include:
a. Group activities such as exercise, music, and reminiscing sessions.
b. Craft projects.
c. Manicures.
d. Engagement in household activities such as folding laundry, setting tables, washing dishes, sorting silverware, and light dusting.
5. Coordinating with the Life Enrichment Coordinator for special events including:
a. Musical programs.
b. Outings.
c. Family events.
6. Assisting Resident Service Assistants with the application of GEMS concepts.
7. Preparing activity materials for residents consisting of:
a. Craft supplies.
b. Games.
c. Puzzles.
d. Manicure supplies, with a selection of polish colors.
8. Upholding all Resident Rights, including maintaining confidentiality.
9. Performing additional duties as assigned to support the objectives of the living center.

General responsibilities include:
1. Serving as a goodwill ambassador for the living center.
2. Complying with Life Safety policies and participating in regular drills.
3. Engaging in training opportunities for professional development.
4. Reporting any safety and health hazards to the Maintenance Supervisor.
5. Collaborating effectively with colleagues across shifts.
6. Adhering to assigned work schedules.
7. Treating all residents with dignity and respect.
8. Monitoring residents for any changes in their physical, emotional, cognitive, or behavioral conditions.
9. Communicating any observed changes to the Shift Supervisor.
10. Complying with infection control protocols.
11. Adhering to the expectations set forth in the Employee Handbook.

Physical and mental requirements of the position include:
1. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
2. Capacity to stand, bend, twist, turn, stoop, squat, sit, kneel, pull, push, and walk long distances on hard surfaces for extended periods.
3. Capability to perform repetitive physical tasks.
4. Tolerance for exposure to varying temperatures.
5. Ability to work with strong odors and chemicals, such as those used for manicures.

Employees are eligible for a 2% wage increase after 90 days of employment, along with annual merit increases based on performance evaluations by supervisors. This is a part-time position requiring 16 to 20 hours per week, and candidates must be available to work every other weekend.
