As a licensed Funeral Director, you will compassionately facilitate discussions regarding funeral arrangements with the deceased’s next of kin and oversee visitation, funeral, and graveside services, ensuring adherence to the family’s wishes, company standards, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations. You will be responsible for maintaining compliance with all mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulations within the funeral establishment.

Job Responsibilities

Arrangements Conference

  • Initiate or receive calls from the deceased’s next of kin, demonstrating empathy while confirming contact information and briefly discussing their needs. Schedule Arrangement appointments and send email confirmations.
  • Perform removals or transfers in accordance with company standards, treating the deceased with respect and updating the status in proprietary software.
  • Greet the next of kin upon arrival and guide them to the meeting space. Conduct the Arrangements Conference, assessing needs and summarizing desired outcomes. Discuss available life insurance options and benefits, such as veteran services, while promoting funeral, cemetery, and crematory services, including catering, floral arrangements, music, and Ever Lasting Memory products.
  • Transition the Arrangements Conference to the Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor for presentation of cemetery property and merchandise options, pricing, and contract finalization. In the absence of an FSA/FSC, assume those responsibilities.
  • Review and authorize any revisions to merchandise and service contracts.

Directing Services

  • Confirm authorization to proceed with service arrangements. Function as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for visitation, funeral, or graveside services, ensuring professionalism, organization, and care in line with Company standards. Attend graveside services included in the purchase agreement, and ensure personal belongings are removed from the deceased prior to burial.
  • Conduct visual inspections of the deceased, adjusting casket dressing, attire, or makeup as needed, and communicate any concerns to the preparation staff. Verify that service arrangements align with contractual agreements and the expectations of the next of kin, initiating corrective actions as necessary.
  • Engage with families to understand and fulfill their death care requests, while seeking opportunities for pre-need service leads.

Event Planning

  • Handle various event planning duties, including resource planning and ordering music, flowers, or catering to fulfill arrangement requests. Create and produce memorabilia products, which may involve scanning photos, ordering keepsakes, crafting electronic presentations, writing obituaries, and designing online memorials. Prepare the event room before services and clean up afterward, ensuring proper storage of items and identifying any items needing repair.
  • Perform attendant duties as required, which may include roles such as parking lot attendant, driver, usher, pallbearer, or courier.
  • Attend community or charity events to represent and promote the location.

General

  • Work under general guidance, leveraging licensure within a business context while complying with regulations, policies, and procedures. Peer reviews will be conducted to maintain accuracy and quality. Collaborate with peers and managers for support and guidance. Exhibit accountability for your actions and ensure compliance with all regulations.
  • Proactively discuss assignments, expectations, and priorities with management, volunteering for additional tasks when workloads permit. Adapt effectively to new work structures, processes, and cultures. Accept additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education & Licenses

  • Graduate of an accredited school or college of mortuary science.
  • Current Funeral Director license within the practicing state.
  • Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record necessary for operating company-owned vehicles.

Experience

  • Preferred industry experience.
