Job description:

Medication Technicians play a vital role within our wellness team by ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely administration of medications to residents, all under the supervision of a licensed nurse and the general direction of the Wellness Director.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and administer medications in accordance with state regulations and established policies and procedures.
  • Accurately complete required documentation of medication administration at the time of service delivery, verifying the identity of the resident receiving medication and recording the name of the drug, dosage, route, and time of administration on designated forms.
  • Review Medication Administration Records (MARs) immediately after administering medication and prior to the end of shift to confirm completeness and accuracy of documentation.
  • Notify the supervisor when opting not to administer medication as ordered.
  • Communicate effectively at the end of shift, relaying pertinent information regarding resident care, concerns, changes, and other relevant matters to incoming and outgoing personnel.
  • Maintain the security of the medication cart and narcotic keys throughout the entire shift. Conduct narcotic counts at the beginning and conclusion of every shift in compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Observe residents and report any changes in their psychosocial and physical condition as well as other concerns (e.g., skin breakdown, rash, behavioral changes) to the Wellness Director.
  • Uphold a clean, safe, and orderly environment for residents, ensuring that resident rooms remain tidy and executing scheduled housekeeping tasks, such as laundry, as assigned.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living, including ambulation, transferring, showering, personal hygiene, incontinence care, feeding, reminders, and supervision as outlined in individual care plans.
  • Organize and engage residents in group or one-on-one activities, encouraging socialization and participation in planned events to foster friendships among residents.
  • Maintain professional communication with physicians and third-party specialists, such as home care providers, laboratory providers, and hospice professionals.
  • Ensure daily maintenance of resident records following company policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to established safety protocols, including fire protection, infection control, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and quality assurance procedures. Respond promptly and positively to all requests for assistance, including emergency pull cords, phone calls, and inquiries from family members or friends.
  • Report all complaints, grievances, suspicions of abuse, and instances of abuse to the Wellness Director and/or Executive Director.
  • Attend Wellness meetings and required training sessions to ensure compliance with all regulations and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with both residents and staff; proficient in reading and comprehending simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos, as well as crafting basic correspondence.
  • Capable of making routine decisions based on state regulations, training, and detailed guidelines, with issues generally resolved by following clear instructions or reporting to a supervisor.
  • Successful completion of a state-approved medication administration course and other state-required certifications to fulfill job responsibilities as permitted by state regulations.

Preferred Skills/Abilities:

  • Prior experience as a Certified Medication Aide or Medication Technician.
  • Experience working with older adults.
  • Previous experience in Assisted Living or Memory Care environments.
  • Familiarity with dementia and related diseases.

Education and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent educational experience.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, tuberculosis test, and physical examination.

Physical Demands:
