PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
As a vital member of the dialysis healthcare team, you will provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. This role adheres to organizational policies and procedures as well as regulations established by corporate, state, and federal agencies. Your responsibilities include the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, and actively participating in the organization’s Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives to ensure patient satisfaction and support the achievement of Quality Enhancement Goals.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Related Responsibilities:
Education:
Assist healthcare team members in providing comprehensive education to patients regarding adequacy measures where appropriate, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), and Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), as well as disease processes and access.
Treatment:
- Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
- Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
- Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight, and perform vascular access evaluations prior to treatment.
- Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
- Address intradialytic problems, monitoring patients’ responses to therapy.
- Document all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment and evaluate patients prior to termination of venous access, including standing and sitting blood pressure assessments.
- Ensure hemostasis and appropriate dressing application after treatment.
- Accurately record and document treatment parameters, including vital signs and dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goals.
- Report significant information or changes in patient condition to the registered nurse or supervisor and conduct machine safety checks per facility policy.
- Manage all prescribed laboratory testing and ensure compliance with infection control protocols.
Staff Related Responsibilities:
- Assist in training direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
- Maintain environmental integrity and ensure compliance with safety and sanitation policies, including cleaning dialysis machines and surrounding areas.
Record Keeping:
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and maintain accurate and timely documentation of treatment data in designated clinical applications.
- Prepare and manage patient documentation, including lab requisitions, and ensure the proper collection and labeling of lab samples.
Infection Control:
- Support adherence to infection control practices and participate in education efforts directed toward patients and their families.
Transitional Care Unit:
- Assist newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis, providing education and coordinating care.
- Liaise with appropriate staff to ensure comprehensive patient experiences and facilitate understanding of available treatment options.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
This role requires the ability to perform essential functions in a healthcare environment, including desk work, patient interaction, and travel between assigned facilities. Employees may encounter infectious materials and will frequently lift and move patients, requiring strength and endurance. The position demands prolonged periods of standing and may involve lifting up to 40 pounds.
EDUCATION AND LICENSES:
- High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
- Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the designated timelines.
- All necessary state licensure and training must be obtained.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
Preferred candidates will possess previous patient care experience in a hospital or related setting. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the organization’s dialysis training program and CPR certification.
