Job Summary / Responsibilities:
The Packaging Machine Operator, under general supervision, is accountable for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of snack packaging machinery. Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing the production schedule and planning operation accordingly.
- Maintaining the functionality of packaging machinery by monitoring codes, dates, and prices.
- Ensuring an adequate supply of roll stock and all necessary packaging materials are available for each machine.
- Adjusting the machine micro-logic set-up as required to optimize efficiency and minimize waste.
- Demonstrating the necessary skills to operate packaging equipment effectively, including machine setups, changeovers, procedural adjustments, sanitation cleanup, and shutdown.
- Planning ahead for machine changeovers and managing transitions between product items efficiently.
- Monitoring and adjusting each machine to ensure proper film cut-off and sealing of bags.
- Ensuring that machinery operates at established standard speeds.
- Regularly checking weights and product appearance as necessary.
- Accurately accounting for product run-off and handling excess product appropriately, including sorting and reworking quality products.
- Keeping machines and work areas clean, performing routine wipes of machinery, and blowing down areas as needed.
- Promptly reporting any maintenance issues to the Maintenance Mechanic or Supervisor.
- Adhering to safety and hygiene guidelines for effective housekeeping and personal protection.
- Storing supplies in designated areas and maintaining clear workspace aisles and exits.
- Following safe lifting and carrying practices while identifying and reporting equipment issues, as well as reporting any job-related injuries to supervision.
- Providing leadership and direction to the entire packaging line.
- Being qualified to serve as a Back-up Packaging Coordinator or in other technical/specialized roles as necessary.
- If applicable, monitoring and replenishing seasoning on overhead systems to ensure proper coverage on products.
- Being available for mandatory overtime as required.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
A High School Diploma or GED is required, along with a minimum of one year of production experience in a manufacturing environment.
Physical Requirements:
Candidates must be able to meet the physical demands of frequently lifting and moving stock, either manually or with equipment (including pallet jacks and forklifts). Regular lifting of 40+ lbs is required, with occasional lifts exceeding 50 lbs, supported by mechanical means or peer assistance.
