Job Overview
This role requires performing master mechanical work while supervising a team of skilled mechanical technicians.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct repairs on various mechanical equipment including fans, mechanical seals, bearings, pumps, motors, laboratory equipment, autoclaves, glass washers, water purification systems, utility systems, and associated structures. Welding and brazing tasks may be required.
  • Periodically inspect and test installed equipment to ensure proper assembly of components, identifying necessary repairs in accordance with technical orders, blueprints, specifications, manuals, and established procedures.
  • Repair and troubleshoot complex steam pressure reducing systems, safety devices, condensate return systems, steam traps, and perform water treatment and testing, including applying necessary chemicals. Conduct inspections and repairs of critical laboratory exhaust systems such as fume hoods, including air balance assessments.
  • Occasionally serve as a lead worker to supervise and train semi-skilled and skilled air quality workers and tradespeople; assist the supervisor in allocating work assignments, reviewing performance, and training new staff while coordinating efforts with other trades.
  • Ensure maintenance of prescribed housekeeping standards within the work area.
  • Perform additional duties as required by departmental needs. This job description may be subject to change.

Required Education

  • A certificate from an accredited related apprenticeship program. A combination of two (2) years of relevant work experience and/or specialized training may substitute for the educational requirement.

Required Trainings/Certifications

  • A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is necessary.

Required Experience

  • A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience is required.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • The position involves various physical activities, including but not limited to the following:
    • Seldom sitting; frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional climbing, kneeling, and squatting.
    • The ability to lift weights ranging from 20 to over 50 pounds frequently.
    • Working in outdoor environments, often without weather protection, and potentially encountering significant noise levels.
    • Exposure to physical hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, and chemicals, alongside conditions that may affect respiratory health and claustrophobic environments.
