Position: Lyon Township Building Official
Reports to: Elected Officials – Township Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer
General Responsibilities:
The Building Official is tasked with ensuring adherence to and enforcement of current Michigan Building Codes. Under the supervision of the Township Supervisor, Treasurer, and Clerk, the Building Official will:
- Perform professional and administrative duties.
- Assist Township residents, commercial property owners, and developers with building-related inquiries and concerns.
- Interpret and enforce applicable building ordinances.
- Support employees engaged in planning, building, and code enforcement services.
This is a full-time position, where the individual will lead the Building Department in its commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.
Hours: Full Time

Salary Range: $75,000 – $90,000 (commensurate with experience)
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
The Lyon Township Building Official is responsible for the enforcement of Michigan Building Codes. The ideal candidate must hold active Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plan Reviewer licenses issued and certified by the State of Michigan. Extensive knowledge of residential and commercial construction processes, as well as Michigan Building Codes, is essential. Candidates should possess proven experience in construction, coupled with strong analytical, prioritization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
The Building Official will guide the development and continual enhancement of permitting and inspection processes. A proactive approach to researching new technologies and methodologies aimed at improving Building Department operations is necessary.
In this role, the Building Official will enforce State Codes and address construction and property-related challenges. A thorough understanding of construction processes and exceptional communication skills, both within the organization and with external stakeholders, are required. Superior customer service skills and a strong work ethic are critical.
The Building Official also represents the Building Department both internally and externally, acting as the subject matter expert on State Building Codes and construction matters. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting in Building Code enforcement litigation as necessary.
- Attending administrative meetings and Township Board of Trustees meetings.
- Coordinating with local, County, and State authorities as needed.
- Assisting in the preparation and monitoring of annual Building Department budgets.
- Addressing inquiries and concerns both in the office and via phone.
- Representing the department in various meetings as requested or required.
The Building Official provides overall direction for Building Department staff. It is essential to have strong prioritization, communication, and delegation skills. A commitment to exemplary work ethic, integrity, and customer service is essential for establishing the department’s tone and objectives. Oversight of contracted inspectors related to inspection services, invoice approvals, and public relations is also a crucial part of this role.

or - High School Diploma/GED with 8 years of progressive experience in building construction, inspections, and ordinance enforcement.
