Job Description:

The role of a School Bus Assistant is essential for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of students. This position involves providing support to the bus driver by assisting with the movement and management of students while they are transported to their designated destination, as well as during boarding and disembarking from the vehicle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist students in safely entering and exiting the bus.
  • Uphold the highest standards of ethical practice and personal integrity; report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior to a supervisor or manager.
  • Ensure the safe seating of students using appropriate seat belts, car seats, or wheelchair restraints.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, demonstrating a commendable attitude, strong moral character, and integrity.
  • Monitor student behavior to ensure compliance with safety regulations and conduct rules at all times.
  • Implement effective student management through communication and discipline in accordance with company policy.
  • Document and report any violations or concerns regarding student conduct to the appropriate authorities.
  • Provide physical assistance to passengers during emergency evacuations.
  • Ensure that students take all personal belongings when exiting the bus.
  • Support the driver in maintaining the cleanliness and presentability of the bus’s interior.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and timely submit it to the appropriate personnel or department.
  • Exercise the highest level of professionalism and ethical behavior in interactions with colleagues, supervisors, parents, and school personnel, continuously promoting the goodwill of the company.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
  • Arrive on time for duties and perform all responsibilities with a focus on safety.
  • Attend all required training sessions, safety meetings, and in-service training sessions.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Requirements Include:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age; for New York School Bus Assistants, candidates must be at least 19 years of age in accordance with state law.
  • Must meet specified physical and medical standards.
  • Successful completion of all training programs and attendance at safety and in-service meetings are required to maintain qualification.
  • A high degree of attention to detail and dexterity is necessary to safely utilize various types of restraints and secure wheelchairs.
  • Ability to effectively interact with and support children.
  • Competence in maintaining effective behavior management among students.
  • High professionalism and diplomacy when dealing with students, fellow employees, parents, and school district personnel.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical ability to lift and assist students as needed.
