General Summary:
The Category Manager plays a pivotal role in defining, developing, and implementing the sourcing program for key expenditure categories, aimed at achieving cost savings while supporting the strategic goals of our business unit customers, supply chain, and the enterprise as a whole. This role involves close collaboration with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and supply chain teams to deliver value-added outcomes, ensuring the procurement of optimal total cost of ownership while maintaining quality and compliance with schedules.

  • A High School Diploma coupled with four or more years of the following is required:
    • Proficiency in typical enterprise-wide functions and relevant products, equipment, and services.
    • Expertise in Lean, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement models.

    • Familiarity with utility supply chain operations.
    • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Supply Chain, Engineering, Business, or Accounting/Finance is preferred.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Category Management: Oversee over $100 million in annually managed spend across designated categories, acting as a subject matter expert. Monitor market drivers, supplier bases, emerging technologies, regulatory factors, and performance metrics including category spend by supplier.

  • Spend and Market Analysis: Conduct comprehensive market and financial analyses to identify key trends and mitigate associated business risks. Employ rigorous analysis of market and spending data to prioritize strategic sourcing initiatives.

  • Specification Management: Lead the process from the definition of needs to contract administration, ensuring alignment with industry standards such as the Construction Specifications Institute and investment recovery protocols.

  • Sourcing Strategies: Integrate market and spending analyses to devise effective sourcing strategies aimed at maximizing savings while ensuring the necessary products and services are procured strategically.

  • Competitive Process: Cultivate a competitive environment to enhance performance and reduce costs, while guiding the organization through the competitive bidding process and explaining the rationale behind each methodological step.

  • Negotiations: Collaborate on negotiation strategies for complex contracts, working alongside Legal to ensure appropriate commercial protections are integrated. Execute negotiations effectively to achieve optimal outcomes, distinguishing between positions and interests to facilitate mutually beneficial results.

  • Supplier Identification and Development: Identify new suppliers and potential products or technologies and maintain cradle-to-grave ownership for each assigned category.

  • Continuous Improvement: Drive the implementation of leading practices within strategic procurement to enhance processes, remaining informed on industry innovations to ensure ongoing functional improvements.

  • Supplier Development and Performance: Establish and nurture professional relationships with suppliers based on ethical business practices, serving as the primary liaison for assigned categories. Manage key performance metrics for chosen suppliers, negotiating multiple variables to secure long-term strategic contracts that yield significant cost reductions and improved service levels.
