Position Purpose:
Food and food service delivery drivers play a crucial role in the nation’s food supply chain. Our drivers are not only responsible for ensuring the timely and safe arrival of products to customers, but they also represent our company, cultivating long-lasting relationships.
In this role, you will be tasked with operating a tractor trailer or straight truck for intrastate and interstate deliveries. You will be responsible for delivering and unloading food and food-related products while adhering to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Engage with customers, vendors, and co-workers in a professional manner, ensuring that inquiries are addressed accurately and promptly.
- Collaborate effectively as a team member within the department and the organization, performing any duties as assigned to enhance corporate service.
- Conduct all mandated safety checks (including pre/post-trip inspections) on the tractor/truck and trailer to ensure compliance with DOT regulations and company safety standards, taking appropriate action as necessary.
- Report all safety concerns and required repairs.
- Follow DOT regulations and adhere to company safe driving protocols.
- Immediately report safety hazards and ensure that trailers are properly loaded and secured.
- Perform item count checks and verify customer invoices for loaded products.
- Complete necessary documentation associated with freight clearly and accurately.
- Maneuver the tractor to the loading dock to attach preloaded trailers as required.
- Execute the delivery of customer orders according to a predetermined routing schedule.
- Unload products from the trailer and transport items into designated storage areas for customers.
- Conduct damage control assessments on items; scan and notify supervisors for order removals per company policy.
- Confirm delivery of items with customers and obtain necessary signatures.
- Collect payments (cash or checks) as required, and load customer returns securely onto the trailer.
- Ensure that the tractor, trailer, and freight are always properly locked and secured.
- Unload damaged goods and customer returns, maintaining a complete record of necessary paperwork. Clear all equipment and debris from trailers as required.
- Maintain a daily record of hours of service in accordance with federal, state, and company regulations.
- Perform general housekeeping duties in the tractor, loading dock area, and ensure trailers are kept clean.
- At the conclusion of your shift, secure all equipment and complete required documentation.
- Undertake additional related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 12 months of commercial driving experience.
- High school diploma or GED, or a state-approved equivalent.
- A valid CDL A license.
- Compliance with all state licensing and certification requirements (where applicable).
- Must be 21 years or older.
- A clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the preceding three years.
- Successful completion of a post-offer drug test and criminal background check.
- Pass a road test.
- Must possess a valid, current DOT Health Card or be eligible to obtain one.
- Ability to hand-lift and utilize a two-wheeler, lift gate, or other equipment to move and stack product cases/freight of varying sizes and weights throughout the shift, generally between 10-35 pounds, with some items weighing up to 60-90 pounds depending on location.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with onboard computer and electronic log systems (e.g., PeopleNet).
- Familiarity with hand-held point of delivery scanning systems (e.g., POD).
- Previous customer service-related work experience.
