Job description:

Based in northwest Michigan, Northern Building Supply (NBS) operates two full-service lumber yards and is recognized as the region’s premier supplier of premium building materials for both contractors and homeowners. In addition to offering high-quality lumber, NBS distributes an extensive selection of specialty products, including windows, doors, cabinets, decking, and both interior and exterior trim.

The role involves delivering materials to job sites, maintaining and inspecting the delivery truck, reporting any shortages or claims to supervisors, and assisting with the loading and storage of materials. This position is typically suited for less experienced CDL or tractor trailer drivers.

Pay Range: $20-$26/hour

Essential Job Duties:

  • Maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License as required.
  • Prepare DOT-required logs documenting time on duty and driving.
  • Organize and secure loads while assisting forklift operators during loading procedures.
  • Account for all company funds, including cash-on-delivery (C.O.D.) transactions.
  • Verify orders for accuracy, ensuring materials are delivered and unloaded to customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct daily pre-inspections of all equipment.
  • Document all merchandise returned via the truck and assist in unloading materials returned for credit.
  • Adhere to Department of Transportation guidelines, operate Boom equipment safely and efficiently, and maintain accurate records regarding equipment use and time charged.
  • Log deliveries on the supervisor’s log sheet.
  • Provide assistance to customers while the truck is being loaded.
  • Communicate messages received from customers while on-site.
  • Support supervisors and other staff members, as assigned, and contribute to maintaining cleanliness and organization in the yard and warehouse.
  • Comply with the Company’s attendance policy by maintaining regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum education required: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED).
  • Minimum experience required: 6 months of CDL driving experience, including lumber dumping.
  • Basic CDL experience with flatbeds and/or tractor trailers is required.
  • Special skills required include the ability to perform basic arithmetic, read orders, write instructions, and complete necessary forms.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and supervisors through verbal and written methods while employing safe lifting techniques.
  • Possess a clean driving record, a current CDL operator’s license, and meet current DOT qualifications.
  • Physical demands include the ability to stoop, bend, twist, and lift up to 100 lbs or more on a repetitive basis, as well as working in various climates and environmental conditions.
