Summary:
Under the supervision of Registered and/or Practical Nurses, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for providing a variety of care activities for elderly residents within a long-term care setting. Responsibilities include assisting residents with dressing, bathing, and dining, collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens, and monitoring vital signs, though the administration of intravenous fluids is not permitted. The CNA will also assist nursing staff with procedures as needed and document resident care services and interactions.

Essential Position Functions:
The following responsibilities are typical for this position. This list is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Responds to signal lights, bells, or the intercom system to ascertain residents’ needs.
  • Assists residents with bathing, dressing, and undressing.
  • Serves and collects food trays and provides assistance to residents who require help with eating.
  • Transports residents or aids them in walking.
  • Drapes residents for examinations and treatments; remains with residents to assist with instruments and lighting adjustments.
  • Turns and repositions residents, independently or with assistance, to prevent bedsores.
  • Changes bed linens, runs errands, directs visitors, and answers telephone inquiries.
  • Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output as directed.
  • Assists with laundry and housekeeping tasks.
  • Dusts and cleans residents’ rooms.
  • Demonstrates reliability by adhering to attendance and punctuality standards without restrictions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Education/Experience:

  • A one-year certificate from a college or technical school, or three to six months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Certified Nurse’s Aide certification in Michigan is mandatory.
