Salary Information
The salary range for this position is $76,107.20 to $88,691.20 annually.

  • Starting Salary: $76,107.20
  • After Six Months of Successful Employment: $79,393.60
  • After One Year of Successful Employment: $81,016.00
  • Maximum salary is achieved after four successful years of employment.

Please note that annual salary adjustments may occur in accordance with collective bargaining agreements.

Job Responsibilities
The Planner IV position is primarily responsible for advanced site planning, mapping, and other GIS-related tasks. Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the primary contact for general planning and zoning inquiries.
  • Regularly updating and maintaining GIS coverages and various planning databases.
  • Assisting City departments, developers, architects, engineers, attorneys, residents, and other stakeholders with zoning ordinances, site plans, special land use requests, easements and right-of-way vacations, liquor licenses, land divisions, and sign permits.
  • Reviewing and processing all zoning amendments, waivers, and site plan petitions.
  • Preparing maps and comprehensive reports.
  • Analyzing relevant data.
  • Attending Planning Commission study sessions, regular meetings, and public hearings as required.
  • Performing other associated duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Application Process
By the closing date of this announcement, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien with the authorization to work in the United States.
  • Hold a valid Michigan driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in urban and regional planning, business, public administration, or a closely related field.
  • Have a minimum of three years of relevant experience in planning.
  • Demonstrate experience in computer usage and written communication.
  • Exhibit proficiency in software applications such as ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office.
  • Have a solid understanding of land use planning techniques and zoning regulations.
  • Be knowledgeable about Michigan’s municipal planning, land use, zoning, economic development laws, and incentive programs.

Experience in a municipal setting is preferred. Candidates are required to present an original degree or official transcripts during the interview process.

Probationary Period
New appointees must satisfactorily complete a six-month probationary period before their appointment is considered regular.

Benefits Overview
A new employee orientation will be provided for each regular employee, detailing the associated benefits.

  • Paid Time Off: Employees accrue vacation and sick time based on their years of service, starting at eight hours per month. After six months of successful employment, employees are entitled to three personal business days annually. Additionally, there are thirteen paid holidays each calendar year.
  • Medical Benefits: Employees are offered medical and prescription coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Options include three Community Blue PPO plans with premiums determined annually. Coverage becomes effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment, and employees may receive $1,000 annually in lieu of coverage if opting out.
  • Dental & Vision: Delta Dental and EyeMed provide dental and vision insurance for regular employees, with eligibility commencing the first of the month following employment.
  • Life Insurance: The City covers a Life Insurance policy equal to one time the annual base salary plus $2,000 for full-time employees, effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
  • Defined Contribution Plan: Employees are able to contribute 4.5%, while the City contributes 12%. Contributions begin six months after hire, with vesting occurring after four years of service.
  • Retirement Health Savings Plan: A Retirement Health Savings Plan is available for employees, with contributions from both the employee and the City vesting after four years of service.
  • Clothing Voucher: Eligible employees receive a $100 clothing voucher each fiscal year upon completion of their probationary period.
  • Voluntary Supplemental Benefits: Employees may enroll in a supplemental benefit program that includes accident, critical illness, hospital indemnity, short-term disability coverage, identity theft protection, and legal assistance.
