Our Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program, the sole facility of its kind in West Michigan, offers marrow, peripheral stem cell, and umbilical cord blood transplants for both cancerous and noncancerous conditions. Our specialized multidisciplinary team possesses extensive knowledge, ensuring exceptional patient care throughout the transplant process. Our nationally recognized adult BMT specialists bring over 50 years of combined experience, providing a wealth of expertise.

Job Summary

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will lead all clinical pharmacy activities within their designated area, aligning with the department’s pharmaceutical objectives. This role involves fostering teamwork among pharmacy and non-pharmacy staff to achieve departmental and corporate goals. The specialist will support staff development to ensure competency standards are met and advocate for ongoing professional advancement. The position demands sound judgment and decisiveness in daily operations, alongside a commitment to maintaining contemporary pharmaceutical practice and personal professional growth. The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist serves as a role model of clinical excellence and provides oversight and guidance across assigned areas. Responsibilities include participating in the planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of new programs and initiatives, with a particular focus on promoting safe, effective, and cost-efficient medication therapy.

Essential Functions

• Contribute to the management of the pharmacy drug budget by ensuring proper medication formulary usage.
• Deliver quality patient-specific pharmaceutical care while documenting interventions that consider clinical outcomes and financial impacts.
• Develop and oversee data collection and review for drug utilization studies, quality improvement metrics, adverse drug events, and other departmental or organizational processes.
• Engage in direct patient care, offering drug information, interventions, and recommendations based on current evidence-based practices.
• Assist in coordinating and assessing organizational quality improvement initiatives and achieving core pharmacy practice indicators.
• Aid in the decision-making process regarding formulary management while ensuring safe medication administration and handling protocols are in place.
• Participate in developing processes for the safe control, administration, and destruction of investigational drugs.
• Contribute to the clinical education and training of students, pharmacists, and residents.
• Develop patient education materials, in-service training, and continuing education programs for pharmacy staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers concerning medication therapy.
• Engage in the identification and prevention of medication errors and adverse drug events.
• Take part in internal subcommittees or working groups.
• Perform operational and clinical duties as necessary.
• Undertake additional responsibilities as required.
• Refer to addendums for specific specialty job requirements.

Qualifications

• Required: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy.
• Preferred: Completion of residency training.
• Minimum of three years of relevant experience; preferred three years as a clinical pharmacist or completion of a pharmacy residency/fellowship.
• Candidates without residency training must demonstrate exceptional knowledge (e.g., board certification or significant clinical experience) in their area of expertise may be considered.
• Licensure: Clinical Pharmacist and Controlled Substance certifications from the State of Michigan, or eligibility to obtain upon hire.
• Certifications in immunization (APhA) and Basic Life Support (BLS) are required within 180 days of hire.
• The ideal candidate will possess a Pharm.D. degree and have completed a PGY2 Residency in Oncology, with additional experience in Oncology and/or Bone Marrow Transplant.
• Strong collaboration skills and experience working with multidisciplinary teams are essential.
• This position entails day shifts with a rotation every sixth weekend, with an on-site attendance of approximately 90% and 10% remote work flexibility.
