Job description:

DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Oakland County is dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service and high-quality medical care. This facility includes the Harris Birthing Center, featuring private birthing suites; the Charach Cancer Treatment Center, in collaboration with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center; comprehensive cardiac services; and extensive inpatient and outpatient diagnostic care. Huron Valley-Sinai consistently ranks among the nation’s top hospitals in emergency services, obstetrics, and ambulatory surgery.

Under limited supervision, the role entails the preparation and management of all hot food items requiring on-site preparation for the cafeteria and special events. Responsibilities also include assisting with daily clean-up activities, washing pans, and performing routine cleaning of assigned areas on a monthly and weekly basis.

  1. Prepare hot food items according to the daily production sheet, ensuring accurate quantity and adherence to standardized recipes and safe food handling practices. Proficient use of kitchen equipment, including convection ovens, slicers, and steam kettles, is required.
  2. Clean and sanitize the designated work area.
  3. Maintain and clean both small and large kitchen equipment.
  4. Ensure proper storage and refrigeration of all food items.
  5. Assist with food production planning initiatives.
  6. Provide backup support for the patient tray line and cafeteria as needed throughout the day, which may include setup or serving in the cafeteria and assembly of trays.
  7. Participate in in-service training programs as organized by the Nutrition Services Department.
  8. Adhere to the “We Care” program philosophy, along with all hospital policies, health regulations, human relations guidelines, safety measures, personnel procedures, and departmental standards, ensuring compliance with all licensing and accreditation requirements.
  9. Undertake additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent educational experience. Vocational training in Culinary Arts is preferred.
  2. Six months of previous experience in institutional or catering cooking, or two years in quantity food preparation.

Skills Required:

  1. Competency in performing basic arithmetic calculations, extending recipes, following standardized recipes, understanding portion control, and evaluating prepared food according to criteria established by the Nutrition Services Department.
  2. Strong communication skills for effective verbal and written interactions.
  3. Interpersonal skills to provide direction to other Nutrition Services personnel as necessary.
  4. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of food production equipment within the kitchen environment.
  5. Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  6. Proficiency in quantity food production techniques.
