Job Overview
The Cook applies their expertise in food production to ensure the proper, timely, and safe preparation and service of meals in accordance with established recipes, while strictly adhering to all food safety and sanitation standards and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment. The Cook is also responsible for effectively managing all food production in the absence of the Dining Services Coordinator.

Responsibilities:
In alignment with Sunrise’s Mission, Principles of Service, and Core Values, the unique responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Upholding high standards for food taste and quality at all times.
  • Preparing and serving meals promptly and in accordance with standardized recipes and menus.
  • Utilizing production sheets to accurately document food production quantities and cooking, holding, and cooling temperatures.
  • Preparing necessary dietary modifications as ordered.
  • Employing Sunrise systems as per guidelines for order taking and meal delivery to guarantee accuracy.
  • Stocking, rotating, dating, and storing products in compliance with food safety regulations.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, storage, and work areas.
  • Completing assigned cleaning duties while ensuring the accuracy of daily and weekly cleaning logs.
  • Maintaining equipment logs and reporting any malfunctions promptly.
  • Ensuring all cooking equipment is in safe and working order and reporting issues as needed.
  • Complying with OSHA, British Columbia Workers Compensation Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations while practicing safety procedures at all times, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and Lockout Tagout procedures.
  • Performing additional Dining Services duties as directed by community leadership, which may include:
    • Washing and sanitizing all dishes, silverware, glassware, utensils, and cookware.
    • Operating dish machine(s) according to manufacturer instructions.
    • Carrying out basic janitorial tasks such as sweeping work areas, sanitizing production areas, and disposing of trash.
    • Cleaning assigned kitchen equipment, including stoves, ovens, fryers, microwaves, mixers, slicers, refrigerators, freezers, worktables, prep sinks, ice makers, coffee machines, hoods, and ventilation screens.
    • Assisting with service in dining areas as needed.

  • Contributing to overall engagement initiatives for both residents and team members.
  • Attending regular meetings, including Town Hall, Department Team, Cross Over, and others as directed by the Dining Services Coordinator (DSC).
  • Maintaining compliance with all required training as mandated by state/province regulations or other authorities that pertain to this role.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in food preparation within a restaurant, hotel, or similar environment.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ongoing maintenance of the following certifications as required by Sunrise and applicable regulations:
    • CPR Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
    • ServSafe® Manager Certificate.
    • Local Health Department Food Handler Card.
    • Prior culinary apprenticeship or training is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Good judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
